Mariah Carey knew estranged sister Alison was ‘a month’ from dying but never reached out, friend reveals
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mariah Carey's late sister Alison's friend David Baker revealed that the 'Don’t Forget About Us' singer knew her estranged sister was ‘a month’ from dying but never reached out.
He added that Mariah did not even check on Alison when she was put on hospice care weeks ago, according to the US Sun.
Mariah shared the shocking news that both her mother and sister died on the same day over the weekend on Monday, August 26, and expressed profound grief over the simultaneous loss.
Mariah Carey did not reach out to estranged sister despite knowing she was dying
Baker said, "A phone call or, better still, a video call would have meant so much to Alison. But it never came", adding that the elder sister was 'unhappy' that Mariah 'cut off contact with her' and maintained a distance.
He said, "The callous rejection added more hurt to Alison’s pain. She talked about it frequently. She wondered if Mariah or any of her relatives would come to her funeral."
He added, "I am told that a memorial service is planned for a future date, but nothing now."
Mariah said in a statement on Monday, "I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
She added, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
When Mariah Carey's siblings sued her for defamation
Mariah was estranged from her siblings, including her brother Morgan Carey, when she released her 2020 memoir 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', which led to her siblings suing her for defamation and 'intentional infliction of emotional distress'.
In the 2020 memoir, Mariah claimed it was 'emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact' as they would 'sell lies' to magazines and adding they had 'attacked' her for decades.
Alison struggled with alcohol addiction apart from other health issues, as per the court documents related to the suit.
Moreover, after a 2015 home invasion, Alison suffered a traumatic brain injury along with vision and short-term memory problems. She also had spine and digestive disorders, per Page Six.
