Mariah Carey's sister Alison's pal shares details of her final weeks as she dies on same day as their mom
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mariah Carey, 55, shared the heartbreaking news that both her mother and sister died on the same day over the weekend on Monday, August 26.
The five-time Grammy winner expressed profound grief over the simultaneous loss of her mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, who, according to sources, was in home hospice care before her death. Specific details about their deaths have not been revealed.
The grieving 'It's a Wrap' singer shared to People, "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
She added, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
As fans flood social media with messages of support, new details have emerged about Alison's final days.
Close friend and carer Dave Baker disclosed to The US Sun that "Alison was on home hospice care for the last three weeks of her life." He also mentioned that Alison "had a problem with internal organs."
Paying tribute, Baker described Alison as "a highly intelligent, warm, and sensitive person," despite her struggles. He noted, "Farewell Alison. May you now find peace, your tortured soul forever free from earthly pain."
Mariah Carey's 2020 memoir shed light on her complex relationship with her mother Patricia Carey
Mariah Carey’s relationship with her family has been fraught, as detailed in her 2020 memoir, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey'. The 'Emotions' songstress described the complex relationship with her mother, Patricia Carey, as a "prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment."
Patricia, who married Alfred Roy Carey in 1960, was a Juilliard-trained Irish-American opera singer and vocal coach before they welcomed Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The couple divorced in 1973 when the 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' star was just three years old.
In an interview with Gayle King in 2022, Mariah said she had "definitely" been affected by criticism from her mother when she was growing up. However, the singer has always credited her mother for exposing her to music.
Mariah Carey claimed that her siblings would 'sell lies' to magazines
While Mariah Carey eventually reconciled with her mother, her relationship with her older sister, Alison Carey, and her brother, Morgan Carey, remained strained.
In the 2020 memoir, the singer claimed it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" as they would "sell lies" to magazines and that they had "attacked" her for decades.
Mariah claimed that her older sister offered her cocaine when she was a child and that she "would barter her body for money or drugs." Alison disputed the claims and filed a lawsuit against Mariah in 2021, but it remained unsettled until her death.
Alison's own turbulent life included a 2016 arrest for prostitution in New York.
Throughout her 20s, she struggled with drug addiction in an effort to regain control of her life, following a traumatic childhood, which included a near-death incident of being "burnt alive" by a relative in a house fire. Alison also claimed to have been repeatedly sexually abused in "satanic worship meetings" organized by her mother, Patricia, which resulted in her suffering from PTSD.
