Mariah Carey's sister's lawsuit accusing singer of being 'vindictive' remained unresolved until her death
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mariah Carey is in profound grief over the deaths of her sister and mother, who died on the same day.
The 'Emotions' singer shared the heartbreaking news on Monday, August 26, that over the weekend her mother Patricia Carey, 87, and Alison Carey, 63, died within hours of one another.
"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," told the 55-year-old pop star to People.
In the wake of Mariah's devastating announcement, InTouch Weekly reported that Alison's lawsuit against her sister had yet to be dismissed before her death.
Alison Carey accused Mariah Carey of purposeful infliction of mental distress in 2021 lawsuit
Mariah Carey's elder sister, Alison Carey, was the middle child of the late Patricia Carey and the late Alfred Carey (who died in 2002 at the age of 72).
Patricia and Alfred, who were also the parents of 64-year-old Morgan Carey, were married from 1960 to 1973, divorcing when Mariah was just three years old.
According to the 'It's a Wrap' singer's 2020 memoir 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', following extensive rehabilitation, she opted to break off communication with both Alison and Morgan.
Following the publication of the book, Alison filed a lawsuit against her Grammy-winning sister in 2021, as per Daily Mail. She sought $1.25 million in damages for Mariah's "heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation."
According to court documents obtained by InTouch, the complaint, however, never progressed beyond the initial filing until her death this weekend.
In the lawsuit, Alison claimed Mariah purposefully caused her emotional suffering with remarks from her 2020 memoir.
She refuted several claims made by Mariah and stated that she "also callously dismisses [her] as an ‘ex’ sister."
The lawsuit cited a line in which the singer claimed that when she was 12 years old, Alison had tried to pimp her out, given her a Valium, and thrown a cup of boiling hot tea at her which resulted in third-degree burns.
The filing said, "But instead of saying no more about her, [Mariah] used her book to humiliate and embarrass" Alison "as stories about the memoir appeared in newspapers around the world, on TV, and across the internet."
The said claims were included in a summons with notice filed by the older sister. However, the proceedings ended abruptly when Mariah insisted that Alison file a formal complaint, and no more action was recorded in the case.
Alison Carey claimed that Mariah Carey's 'cruel and outrageous allegations' had destroyed her
Mariah Carey, according to Alison Carey, made the ludicrous claims "knowing that [Alison] profoundly and permanently damaged as a result of being forced by" their mother "while a pre-teen, to attend terrifying middle-of-the-night satanic worship meetings that included ritual sacrifices."
The lawsuit was filed with the State of New York Supreme Court to obtain compensation for the significant emotional distress Alison claimed to have had, as well as for the great psychological and physical harm, mental suffering, and anguish, per Express.
According to Alison's complaint, she sought professional therapy for her anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in an attempt to manage the awful abuse she had experienced.
She was apparently coping with a number of medical conditions, such as a stomach illness and lower back degeneration.
Alison claimed that her famous and affluent sister had attacked the "penniless" woman in an attempt to promote books. According to the older sister, the "cruel and outrageous allegations" had destroyed her.
