LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mariah Carey has confirmed that her mother Patricia Carey and sister Alison Carey died on the same day over the weekend.

"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the 55-year-old singer told People.

In her statement to the outlet, Mariah Carey expressed her sorrow, saying, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed."

"I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time," she added.

How did Mariah Carey's mother and sister die?

At the time, no further details have been released regarding the cause of death for Patricia and Alison.

Patricia, formerly married to Alfred Roy Carey, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach.

She and Alfred welcomed three children including, Alison, Mariah and son Morgan. The couple later divorced when the Grammy winning artist was just three years old.

Carey has been open about her complicated relationship with her mother Patricia as the singer described their relationship as "a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,"

In her 2020 memoir 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', she wrote, "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions."

"A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's," she added.

The duo appeared together for ABC's 'Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You' special in 2010 when they performed a duet of 'O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.'

Carey also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, acknowledging the challenges they faced while expressing her enduring love.

"And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always," she wrote.

Carey's relationship with her sister Alison also had its own difficulties as she has mentioned in her memoir that it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with her or Morgan.

Internet offers condolences as Mariah Carey confirms death of mom and sister

After Carey announced that her mother and sister died on the same day, netizens rallied to offer condolences to the 'Hero' singer.

One user on X wrote, "this is absolutely devastating i hope she is ok," and another tweeted, "Although she didn’t have the best relationships with them this is still heartbreaking and we will be praying for her."
