WASHINGTON, DC: Robert F Kennedy Jr recently addressed swirling rumors that he was being considered as a potential running mate for Donald Trump.

The 70-year-old politician sat down with Meghan McCain on the latest episode of 'Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat,' aired on January 30.

Marriage at the Forefront

"Frankly, I don't think my marriage would survive," Kennedy quipped to McCain. Married to 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' star Cheryl Hines since 2014, Kennedy expressed gratitude for the attention, saying, "I'm flattered by it, by the attention and the suggestion that it's something people on his staff were interested in. I was flattered by the approaches."

However, Trump supporters, including GOP political strategist Chris LaCivita, swiftly denied any official outreach, with LaCivita stating on X, "NO ONE from the Trump Campaign ever approached RFK Jr (or ever will) - one of the most LIBERAL and radical environmentalists in the country."

Regardless, Kennedy Jr. said he wasn't interested in the first place. "I don't think it was something that was right for me," he told McCain.

According to Ok! Magazine, this isn't the first time Kennedy Jr. has dismissed the idea of aligning with Trump. In August 2023, when asked about joining Trump's team if he were to win the 2024 election, he joked, "My wife would divorce me."

During the interview with McCain, Kennedy Jr took a moment to express his admiration for Hines, acknowledging her support in his political endeavors. "I was shocked that she did that," he said. "She literally would be the best and funniest first lady ever. She's really extraordinary."

Spousal support

Hines was asked how she was handling the spotlight, especially since her husband is on the campaign trail.

"I was gonna say vodka, but you know, you take it one day at a time. And I stay in the moment, try to really focus on things that need attention and things that I shouldn't give attention to, I have to let go by the wayside, which is not always easy. That is easy to say. It's easy to say, yeah. But that's my intention anyway," she told NewsNation’s 'Cuomo.'

Hines shared her initial reaction to her husband's decision to launch his political career. "That was like a tidal wave," she admitted. "But also, he doesn't come to me and talk to me about something if it's not important. So, you know, I took some time with it and really thought about it."

"Bobby inspires a lot of people, and to watch that is really beautiful," she added. "Even in the last three or four years, he has supporters that are Republican, Democrats, and independents. I think he's extraordinary in that way that he has all these people coming together that usually do not come together. He has something very, very special."

Despite concerns about potentially jeopardizing his marriage, Kennedy Jr and Hines believe in the strength of their partnership.

"We closely collaborate. I talked about my candidacy all the time. I think it's difficult for anybody in Hollywood to endorse me particularly early on, but I think it's getting easier and easier," he shared.

"I'm pretty confident at some point we're going to be able to rope more people in."

Internet reacts to Kennedy Jr's response

The revelation about Kennedy Jr's marriage becoming a potential casualty in a Trump alliance sparked a wave of reactions on social media.

"I can imagine that being vice president would certainly put a strain on any marriage, but I have to say, I admire Robert F Kennedy Jr's candor and sense of humor," one posted on X.

"He rejected Donald Trump," another bemoaned.

"Oh, marital bliss trumps politics! Love's more important, huh?" someone else chimed in.

"He staying away from that thought of Trump running him for 4 years," another joked.
