Matt Damon opens up about AI concerns, calls it 'a big thing to worry about'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Matt Damon has made it clear that he is against artificial intelligence (AI) and its use. However, the actor, who is concerned about the potential dangers of the technology, also offered a solution, which may sound simple but could be easier said than done.

Damon is among the many celebrities who have spoken about the dangers of AI, particularly its use in cloning voices and faces.

On his way to the airport, TMZ caught up with Damon and asked how he feels about the growing concerns surrounding AI. The 'Odyssey' actor said people’s fears are definitely warranted, telling the outlet that it is “a big thing to worry about.”

When asked how to control the drastic and potentially dangerous risks posed by AI, the actor shared a pretty simple solution: get the robots in line, and we’ll all be fine.

Back in January, Damon discussed AI and its limitations in Hollywood during an appearance on 'The Joe Rogan Experience' podcast alongside his longtime friend and fellow actor Ben Affleck. He criticized the idea that AI could replace human artistry, arguing that while the technology is fast-paced, it lacks the depth of lived human experience. 

Affleck also did not hold back when discussing the current use of AI. He said ChatGPT and Gemini are impressive, but their output is often average.

Other celebrities who have spoken out against AI

A host of celebrities have spoken out against technology that allows AI is a growing concern. Tom Hanks spoke out after his voice and image were used in an advertisement for a dental plan without his knowledge or consent through artificial intelligence. He wrote: “BEWARE!! There’s a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it.”

Stephen Fry also expressed his anger over AI voice cloning after his voice was used in a documentary he had nothing to do with. “I said not one word of that, it was a machine,” Fry told The Guardian. “Yes, it shocked me. They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books and, from that dataset, an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration."

The late actor Robin Williams’ daughter, Zelda Williams, has also criticized the use of artificial intelligence to recreate her father’s voice. According to Standard UK, the 34-year-old posted: "I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI. I’ve witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad."

Even rapper and singer-songwriter will.i.am has spoken about the potential dangers of AI. The Black Eyed Peas frontman said he believes the rise of AI could be concerning and may lead to lawsuits.
