NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Melania Trump, wife of former president and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, made a powerful and unexpected move on Thursday, October 3, publicly supporting abortion rights in a video posted across her social media platforms.

Her statement came just a day after a leaked excerpt from her soon-to-be-released memoir revealed her stance on women’s right to choose, She writes in her book, "My body, my choice."

Melania Trump stands firm on women's abortion rights

The black-and-white, 30-second video captured the 54-year-old Melania Trump confidently speaking out about a topic that has been at the forefront of national debate.

“Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard,” she affirmed in the video, which promotes her upcoming memoir 'Melania', set to be published on October 8.

“Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women possess from birth, individual freedom,” she reiterated.

Melania’s striking question, “What does ‘My body, my choice’ really mean?” punctuated the clip, sending a clear message about her stance on reproductive rights.

“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” she wrote, according to The Guardian which obtained an advance copy of her upcoming memoir 'Melania'.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes."

“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life," Melania wrote.

Melania Trump's pro-abortion choice stance complicates Donald Trump’s efforts to appeal to women voters

The revelation of Melania Trump’s support for abortion rights adds another twist to the political landscape as her husband, Donald Trump, and his running mate, JD Vance, face increasing pressure to win over women voters ahead of the November 5 election.

Securing trust on abortion rights has been a crucial obstacle for Trump, particularly as the issue has become a significant liability for Republicans since the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

In the aftermath of that ruling, abortion has turned into the GOP’s Achilles heel. The party faced losses in the 2022 midterms, and abortion rights supporters have consistently won ballot measures—even in deep-red states like Kentucky, Kansas, and Ohio.

During his current campaign, Trump has walked a fine line, attempting to appease voters on both sides of the debate. He’s alternately boasted about his role in ending Roe—by appointing three justices instrumental in the decision—and complained that extreme positions on abortion are costing Republicans elections.

Melania Trump urges empathy for women and the personal dilemmas they face

In her memoir, Melania Trump touches on the personal and often painful reasons that lead some women to seek abortions, acknowledging the moral weight of these decisions.

“Many women opt for abortions due to personal medical concerns,” the former first lady explained.

“These situations with significant moral implications weigh heavily on the woman and her family and deserve our empathy,” Melania claimed. She also highlighted the emotional complexities that come with the decision, particularly when a mother’s life might be at risk.

“Consider, for example, the complexity inherent in the decision of whether the mother should risk her own life to give birth,” Melania penned, bringing attention to the profound personal dilemmas many women face.

Melania Trump says her ‘I really don’t care' jacket was a message to media

Melania Trump also addressed the controversy surrounding the jacket she wore during a 2018 visit to migrant children detained at the US-Mexico border.

The former first lady claims that the bold message, “I really don’t care, do U?” was aimed at media outlets relying on anonymous sources for their reporting.

“I was determined… not to let the media’s false narratives affect my mission to help the children and families at the border,” Melania wrote, explaining that the focus on her appearance overshadowed her humanitarian efforts.

The jacket, she acknowledged, "quickly became famous," but she maintains it was chosen to symbolize her defiance against media scrutiny. Melania reveals she instructed her then-press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, to inform the media that the jacket was a message about her indifference to their opinions.

However, her former staff allegedly pushed back, insisting that the jacket had no significance—a narrative widely reported at the time. This account contrasts with Grisham's claim in her own book, where she suggested it was Trump, not Melania, who framed the jacket as a message to the media.
