Melania Trump offers rare glimpse into late mother’s 'magical' influence on Barron’s childhood
WASHINGTON, DC: Despite being born into one of the world’s most recognizable political families, Barron Trump has spent much of his life away from the spotlight, a privacy protected by his mother, Melania.
The 56-year-old first lady recently opened up about her son’s ultra-private childhood, revealing he was particularly close with his late grandmother, Amalija Knavs, who died in January 2024.
In a rare Q&A with USA Today, Melania revealed that her mother helped give Barron a "strong connection to his Slovenian roots" through food, language, and books.
Born in 1970 in Sevnica, Melania moved to the United States and obtained permanent residency in 2006 after marrying the President.
She then brought her parents over from the European country as the Trump family’s political profile grew, and they became US citizens in 2018.
Melania Trump says Barron shared 'magical' bond with his grandmother
Melania described the relationship her only son, Barron, currently studying at NYU's Stern School of Business, shared with her mother as "magical,” as she revealed he used to speak to his grandparents in Slovenian.
"Barron and my mother shared a lovely bond through the Slovenian language, a beautiful connection that celebrates their heritage," she said.
"Both speaking the same language allowed them to communicate deeply and meaningfully,” she added.
Melania went on to highlight that Amalija helped Barron learn a lot about his culture while growing up in New York City by preparing "traditional Slovenian dishes" and reciting stories from her childhood.
"Every story she read to Barron sparked his imagination, and every game they played strengthened their bond. Her delicious meals were more than just food; they were a celebration of togetherness," the first lady said.
Trump credits Amalija for Barron’s tall stature
Amalija’s presence left a deep mark on the Trump family, and her death in January 2024 at the age of 78 was especially heartbreaking for Barron Trump.
Talking about his mother-in-law, Donald Trump shared a tribute to his late mother-in-law at a caucus in Iowa while railing for his Presidential bid.
At that time, he highlighted her lasting impact on his family, even joking that she was responsible for Barron's 6-foot-7 stature.
"That's how he got so tall – he only ate her food," Donald quipped, before adding: "I just want to say, Amalija, you are special. You are one of the most special people I've ever known."
"[Her death] was a tough period of time for the family, but she's amazing, she was amazing. So, I just want to thank what she's done for our family and her husband…Great people, great parents to all of us, really great parents but also to Barron," he finished.
