Melania Trump stuns in symbolic navy outfit by NY-based designer for husband Donald's inauguration
WASHINGTON, DC: Melania Trump turned heads with her sophisticated and symbolic outfit designed by New York-based independent designer Adam Lippes at her husband Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The former model chose a custom navy double-breasted coat paired with a matching skirt at the event on Monday, January 20.
Who is Adam Lippes?
Adam Lippes, known for his minimalist and elegant designs, has built his eponymous label over the past decade, earning acclaim for his modern take on American luxury, according to Vogue.
Sharing his thoughts on the tradition of the presidential inauguration, Lippes stated the event "embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs Melania Trump."
"Mrs Trump's outfit was created by some of America's finest craftsmen, and I take great pride in showing such work to the world. With deep gratitude to Mrs. Trump for her trust and collaboration," he added, as per WWD.
Melania's look was complemented by a navy boater hat from Eric Javits, black leather gloves, and dark blue suede pumps, completing her refined ensemble.
This marks a significant shift in the first lady's fashion choices. Unlike 2017, when she wore a powder-blue ensemble by iconic American designer Ralph Lauren, Melania opted to spotlight emerging domestic talent.
Melania Trump's nod to patriotic colors
Melania’s choice of a classic navy palette was a deliberate nod to the country’s patriotic spirit.
Her ensemble subtly coordinated with her husband's navy coat, emphasizing unity and tradition.
Melania's previous inauguration outfit in 2017, which paid homage to Jackie Kennedy’s timeless elegance, also reflected her ability to merge style with historical resonance.
In 2017, Melania wore a sculptural powder-blue cashmere dress and cropped jacket by Ralph Lauren, styled with matching Manolo Blahnik pumps and gloves.
Her updo and minimalist accessories were reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy’s iconic fashion sense.
Later that evening, January 20, she stunned in an ivory off-the-shoulder gown by Herve Pierre, featuring a dramatic slit and red ribbon accent, which was later donated to the Smithsonian’s 'First Ladies' exhibit.
Melania Trump balances domestic and international style
As the first foreign-born first lady since Louisa Adams, Melania Trump has often turned to international designers for her daily wardrobe, favoring French, Italian, and British labels like Dior, Valentino, and Alexander McQueen, according to Page Six.
However, her inauguration choices highlight her emphasis on supporting American designers.
Melania once remarked on the pressures of selecting inaugural attire, describing it as “a daunting task to choose an outfit that will become part of our nation’s story and forever history.”
