PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Melania Trump's ultra-luxurious life became the target of online critics after she complained about the "cost of food" in a video promoting her upcoming memoir.

In a 37-second video plugging her memoir titled 'Melania' set to hit the stores on September 24, the former first lady recounted the impact of her husband, Donald Trump's 2020 election defeat on her family and the United States.

Claiming that the 2020 election changed everyone's lives forever, Melania added, "It impacted our quality of life, cost of food, gasoline, safety and even the geopolitical landscape.”

The former model shared the video on her X (formerly Twitter) handle with a website link to purchase the memoir, which is priced from a $40 collector's edition to a $250 copy, including a digital collectable.

The truth behind Melania Trump's complaint about 'cost of food'

The skyrocketing rise in grocery prices has been plaguing President Joe Biden's administration since he took office in January 2021.

After Trump reluctantly handed over the White House amidst the chaos sowed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 46th president struggled to bring down inflation. Furthering the crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 increased the energy cost and prices of food products including vegetable oils and grains, as per The New York Times.

For instance, the average cost of a dozen large eggs went from $1.55 when Biden took office to $2.27 at present.

It was only this July that the inflation rate dropped to 3.3% for the first time since Biden ascended to the presidency in early 2021, according to Fox Business.

Compared to the price of daily-use items like groceries, gasoline, and rent in May, the consumer price index (CPI) dropped to 0.1% the next month.

Steep rise in food prices under Biden administration

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, the food prices escalated 21.5% in June 2024 in comparison to January 2021.

The inflation reduction that came two months ago was a victory lap for Biden, who at the time was the Democratic presumptive nominee, but the rising food costs were a roadblock to his administration's achievements.

However, he blamed greedy corporations for it.

"Big corporations making record profits need to do more to lower prices. I’m fighting to give families more breathing room by taking on Big Pharma to cap insulin at $35 per month, taking on Big Oil to lower prices at the pump, and taking on Wall Street to make the wealthy pay their fair share," the president said in July.

In a YouGov poll published in July, 64% of Americans considered inflation a "very serious problem," and several other surveys indicated that grocery prices were of the most significant concern in relation to inflation.

Former president Trump, during his nomination acceptance speech at July's Republican National Convention, also emphasized the grocery costs and vowed to "make America affordable again."

Last month, Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over the Democratic campaign from Biden, put forth her economic plan targeting a reduction in the cost of living. In order to bring down the food costs, she vowed to ban grocery price gouging, which would prevent big corporations from exploiting consumers through profit.

"Hasn’t impacted her quality of life. With her expensive cloths and hand bags. Grifting off people," a user wrote.

"What about the price of her MULTIPLE Hermes bags? Thats gotta be rough on her," another remarked.

"As if she has a clue! She doesn't hesitate to purchase clothing and shoes that cost thousands each," added one user.

"So she sympathizes with those who are less fortunate than her?" someone else asked.

"A woman who has the most expensive handbags is crying," another response read.

"Maybe if she gave up having plastic surgeries, expensive clothes, and European vacations, and got a real job, then she would have the right to complain about anything," an individual wrote.

"Poor Melania. The cost of food and child care just nearly bankrupted her when Barron was a baby," another user said.

"Food price so high I can barely afford someone to clean my gold plated toilet," read one remark.
