Merrick Garland mocked as he slams Republicans attacking DOJ over Donald Trump's hush money verdict
WASHINGTON, DC: Attorney General Merrick Garland slammed Republicans as he claimed they were spreading conspiracy theories suggesting the Justice was Department was involved in the conviction of Donald Trump in the hush money trial.
During a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, Garland listed a "long line of attacks" on the DOJ which included members of Congress who have threatened the department to withhold federal funding over the historic verdict, according to The Hill.
Merrick Garland says Republicans' conspiracy theory is an 'attack on the judicial process'
Speaking about the attacks on the DOJ, Garland said, “It comes alongside false claims that a jury verdict in a state trial, brought by a local district attorney, was somehow controlled by the Justice Department."
"That conspiracy theory is an attack on the judicial process itself,” he added.
Twelve jurors in the case found Trump guilty on all 34 counts while Republicans in Congress have claimed that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg brought charges against the former president for political reasons.
Both Trump's attorneys and prosecutors have agreed on the jurors.
Merrick Garland called out 'extremely dangerous falsehoods' against FBI operations
Before Trump's verdict was announced, the former president's former national security adviser, John Bolton said, “It’s dangerous to question the integrity of our entire legal system,” and added that when Americans question their institutions, enemies of the nation rejoice.
Garland's criticism of Republicans comes amid the Republicans' allegations against the DOJ, including Trump's ludicrous claim that the DOJ authorized law enforcement to assassinate him at Mar-a-Lago during a search for classified documents.
The Justice Department purposefully scheduled to search when Trump would not be home and the document he was referring to actually forbids the FBI from employing lethal force unless there is an imminent threat of danger.
In his opening remarks, Garland said, “baseless and extremely dangerous falsehoods are being spread about the FBI’s law enforcement operations.”
