Meryl Streep discusses doing ‘something together’ with Martin Short as dating rumors linger
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Rumors surrounding actress Meryl Streep and comedian Martin Short have continued to draw attention, particularly following their collaboration on the comedy-drama television series 'Only Murders in the Building.'
The speculation has been fueled by their on-screen chemistry and repeated public appearances together. Streep’s latest remarks have added a fresh layer to the ongoing conversation, even as both actors have consistently denied any romantic relationship.
Meryl Streep’s Broadway comment brings Martin Short into dating buzz spotlight
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s 'Andy Cohen Live' on Monday, April 20, Streep spoke about the possibility of returning to Broadway. 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' star, who made a striking appearance at the film’s premiere just a day earlier, reflected on her history on stage, having performed on Broadway in the 1970s and continued theater work over the years.
When host Andy Cohen asked whether she would consider stepping back onto the stage, Streep referenced Short in her response, drawing renewed attention to their connection.
She said, “Oh, I would love to do so, I was talking with Marty about that. We were thinking that would be fun to do something together.”
Streep and Short have been linked to dating rumors since January 2024, when they were seen together at the Golden Globe Awards.
The speculation intensified after the two portrayed romantic partners in the series, where their characters developed a close relationship. Their performances generated significant attention, with audiences pointing to their natural chemistry on screen.
Following the show’s release, the pair appeared together at several public events, including moments where they were seen holding hands and interacting closely. These appearances fueled assumptions that their relationship extended beyond professional collaboration.
Both actors were single when the rumors began circulating. Streep had quietly separated from her husband of 45 years, sculptor Don Gummer, while Short had long been a widower after the death of his wife, Canadian actress and singer Nancy Dolman, in 2010.

Despite persistent rumors, both actors have maintained that their relationship is not romantic. Short has previously addressed the speculation, speaking warmly about Streep while dismissing claims that they are a couple.
Reflecting on working with her, Short highlighted her ease and presence on set. “I think just how easy it is, how loose she is, she doesn’t carry any of her 21 Oscar nominations to the set,” he told 'Entertainment Tonight' in September 2024.
He also denied the dating rumors, explaining that her casting as his character’s love interest was coincidental.
“We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends. They already planned that I would have a theatrical experience and there would be a love interest,” Short said.
He added, “So that was coincidental, but she just wanted to be on the show. She didn’t know about [the love story].”
Short shared three children with Dolman: daughter Katherine and sons Oliver and Henry. Katherine passed away in February.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” a family statement read.
