LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner supported each other through difficult periods involving their sons’ substance abuse. In his new memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride,’ Douglas recalls how they opened up to each other about their struggles as fathers.
Their conversations offered both men some comfort as they dealt with painful family circumstances.
Michael Douglas recalls Rob Reiner's family struggles
In an excerpt from ‘One Helluva Ride’ published Monday by the Los Angeles Times, Douglas recalled confiding in Reiner about their experiences as fathers to sons dealing with substance abuse.
Douglas’ son, Cameron Douglas, also battled addiction and served seven years in federal prison on related charges.
“We both had sons with serious issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope,” Douglas wrote.
The ‘Wall Street’ star described their conversations as painful but said they ultimately helped the two friends find solace while navigating difficult periods within their families.
“It was a heartbreaking confessional for us,” Douglas wrote, adding that he knew they “gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times.”
Douglas and Reiner also had a professional connection. Reiner directed Douglas in the 1994 romantic comedy ‘The American President.’
Douglas previously spoke about his friendship with Reiner and their conversations about their sons during a CBS News special following the director’s death.
Their discussions took on a tragic significance after Rob and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Los Angeles police determined that the couple had been victims of homicide, and their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that day.
Nick Reiner faces murder charges and trust dispute
Prosecutors allege Nick fatally stabbed his parents before fleeing the home.
He was later indicted on two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations involving multiple murders and lying in wait. Nick pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Nick has been held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, California, since December 2025 while awaiting trial. He has also repeatedly sought access to a family trust worth roughly $1.6 million, but has not seen “even $5” from the trust, which names him as its sole beneficiary.
According to People, the ‘Nick Reiner Children’s Trust Dated December 2, 1993’ was established by his parents. In two separate legal filings, Nick’s attorneys responded to objections from successor trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery and former trustee Paul R Kanin.
His attorneys argued that Nick has been unable to “access even $5 from his trust” to purchase basic necessities through the jail commissary. They also said efforts to obtain “money that is lawfully his own” had been delayed, leaving him without the ability to retain new criminal defense counsel.
His attorneys also pointed to the trust’s “Age-30 Distribution” provision, arguing that Nick became entitled to a substantial payment when he reached the specified age.
“Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. By the Successor Trustee’s own calculation, at least $558,000 became due and payable to him that day. His parents were alive. No one had accused him of anything,” the filing stated.
His attorneys further argued that California’s “slayer statute,” previously cited by trustees as a basis for withholding Nick’s access to the trust, no longer applies to funds that became his before his parents’ deaths.
