NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Speaker Mike Johnson joined the 'Fox & Friends' co-hosts to discuss the conviction of former President Donald Trump in the criminal hush money trial on the episode of Friday, May 31.

Before Johnson proceeded to tear into the justice system, it was noted that Trump's conviction had done wonders for his campaign financially, with the National Republican Congressional Committee raising a record $300,000 in one night.

Mike Johnson calls Trump's conviction 'purely political'

Highlighting the large donations to the Trump campaign, co-host Steve Doocy noted that "angry voters are motivated voters," a statement that was supported by Johnson.

The Louisiana Republican and former litigator claimed that the entire trial was "absurd," stating, "What happened there was outrageous and the American people see it."

"This is a purely political exercise and not a legal one. Everybody knows that. They know intuitively that it is wrong, and people are outraged... People see what is going on, they see that the Democrats are so desperate because President Trump is crushing Joe Biden in the polls ... they will risk the destruction of our entire legal system to do it."

"That's not hyperbole, that's what is going on here," he continued, mentioning that the GOP would ensure that the right verdict by the American people is rendered on November 5, in the general elections.

Mike Johnson on Donald Trump's appeals process

When asked about how Trump is expected to fight his conviction, Johnson said, "There are a lot of developments yet to come, but I do believe that the Supreme Court should step in, obviously. This is totally unprecedented and it is dangerous to our system."

The verdict in the trial "is diminishing the American people's faith in the system of justice itself, and to maintain a Republic, you have to have that," claimed Johnson. "People have to believe justice is fair, that there is equal justice under law. They don't see that right now."

While he was confident that the Justices in the Supreme Court, many of whom he said that he knew personally, would "said this straight," the process would take some time.

"The Democrats know that, of course, and they are dragging it out. They want to bankrupt Donald Trump, they want to diminish his credibility and go after his character. They want to keep him off the campaign trail, which they were successful in doing for many weeks, and now they want to call him a convicted felon. This will be overturned, there is no question about it. It's just going to take some time to do it," he added.
