Minnesota National Guard placed on alert to aid law enforcement amid violent anti-ICE protests
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: The Minnesota National Guard has been placed on alert to aid local law enforcement as anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis turned violent.
The Guard shared a photo showing what its members will wear if activated and said troops remain ready to assist if needed. Officials emphasized that Guard members have not yet been deployed to city streets but are staged to support public safety and protect property if called upon.

Minnesota National Guard on alert amid violent anti-ICE protests
The Minnesota National Guard posted an image on social media displaying the bright yellow reflective vests its members will wear if activated amid escalating protests tied to immigration enforcement.
The Guard said its members are “on alert, ready to assist local law enforcement and public safety agencies.” The reflective vests are intended to help distinguish Guard personnel from other agencies wearing similar uniforms if they are deployed.
In the image, Guard members’ faces were blurred, and they wore the distinctive yellow vests over their uniforms. The Guard noted that its members “live, work, and serve in our state” and are focused on protecting life, preserving property, and ensuring Minnesotans can safely exercise their First Amendment rights.
Officials clarified that Guard members have not yet been deployed to city streets but are staged and prepared to assist public safety authorities if needed.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said that, at the direction of Gov. Tim Walz, the Guard was mobilized and staging to support local law enforcement and emergency management agencies amid the unrest.
Violent protest footage raises public safety concerns in Minneapolis
Videos circulating from recent protests showed multiple conservative demonstrators being beaten by agitators during anti-immigration enforcement demonstrations. The incidents contributed to growing public safety concerns and prompted the Guard’s readiness posture.
Authorities said the Guard’s role, if activated, would be to support law enforcement and emergency operations rather than engage in direct policing.
Renee Nicole Good shooting deepens Minneapolis unrest
Tensions in Minneapolis escalated following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good earlier this month.
Good was shot and killed on Wednesday, January 7, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent identified as Jonathan Ross during an encounter in which she was alleged to have blocked a federal operation and driven toward the agent, according to a Fox News report.
Following the shooting, Democratic officials, including Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, were reported to have encouraged anti-ICE protesters to assemble. Federal prosecutors later opened an investigation into whether law enforcement efforts were obstructed.
The protests have since grown increasingly charged, with political leaders and legal authorities weighing in. US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told Fox News that Democrats’ anti-ICE rhetoric “could escalate to a crime.”
Blanche said that when a governor or mayor threatens federal officers or encourages citizens to interfere with ICE operations, including advising people to call 911 when they see ICE agents, that conduct is “very close to a federal crime.”
Federal prosecutors said the investigation remains in its early stages, and it is unclear whether it will result in criminal charges.
