WASHINGTON, DC: A viral video circulating online has reignited accusations of racial profiling by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

Shared earlier this week and nearing 700,000 views as of publication, the footage shows an ICE agent demanding documents from a man solely “because of his accent” before the encounter escalates into physical force.

Viral ICE video shows agent demanding papers ‘because of his accent’

The disturbing clip, first shared on X, shows what appears to be a group of at least four ICE agents confronting a man outside a residential garage. The lead agent, dressed in military-style tactical gear with his face fully covered, repeatedly presses the man for identification without citing any alleged crime.

When the man calmly asks why he is being stopped and asked for documents, the agent responds bluntly, “Because of your accent.” The justification immediately raises alarm bells, particularly as the man points out that the agent himself appears to speak with an accent as well.

“You have an accent too,” the man says, a remark that seems to sharply escalate the encounter rather than prompt reflection.

ICE agent turns aggressive after man questions legality of stop

As the exchange continues, the agent grows visibly irritated, insisting the man is required to comply. “Yes, you are required to,” the agent says, before issuing what many viewers described as a threat.

“Look, sir, are you going to do this the easy way or are we going to take you in?” the agent asks.

The man pushes back, responding, “You cannot take me in.” The agent counters immediately: “Yes I can. Yes I can. You have documentation?”

When the man confirms that he does have documentation and again asks why it is being demanded, the agent repeats the same explanation that sparked outrage online: “Because of your accent.”

The situation rapidly deteriorates moments later. After demanding to know where the man was born, the agent suddenly shouts, “Put your hands behind your back,” before physically grabbing him.

The footage shows the agent forcing the man’s arms behind his back and slamming him against a nearby garage door. The man appears to be restrained as the agent prepares to handcuff him, while other officers stand nearby.

The video cuts off shortly afterward, leaving unclear whether the man was arrested, charged, or later released. ICE has not publicly identified the officers involved or explained the basis for the stop.

Racial profiling accusations flood social media after video spreads

Reaction online was swift and furious, with users across the political spectrum condemning the incident as unconstitutional and dangerous.

“This is straight-up racial profiling,” wrote Richard Angwin. “ICE demanding papers from a US citizen solely because of his accent is unconstitutional, un-American, and outright fascist.”

Another user highlighted the agent’s apparent loss of composure, writing, “He didn’t like him asking the same question back!”

Others connected the confrontation to broader legal and political developments surrounding immigration enforcement powers.

Critics link ICE confrontation to broader immigration enforcement concerns

Political commentator Lance Whitney blamed the judiciary, writing, “We can thank the Trump supporters on the Supreme Court for giving these thugs carte blanche to stop and threaten anyone they want.”

The video emerges amid heightened scrutiny of ICE operations nationwide, with civil liberties groups warning that aggressive street-level encounters often rely on subjective markers such as language, appearance, or accent.
