BAGHDAD, IRAQ: The United States Embassy in Baghdad was struck by missiles on Friday, March 13 sending smoke rising from inside the sprawling diplomatic compound located in the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

Several media outlets reported that the projectiles landed within the embassy’s perimeter, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

Videos circulating on social media showed smoke billowing from inside the compound shortly after the strike.

According to The Associated Press, one of the missiles hit a helipad inside the embassy complex. No casualties have been reported so far.

The embassy has not yet issued an official statement about the incident.

Multiple media reports indicate the projectile struck within the embassy grounds in Baghdad’s Green Zone, the highly secured district that houses Iraqi government institutions and several foreign diplomatic missions.

The Green Zone has long been considered one of the most protected areas in the Iraqi capital, yet it has repeatedly been targeted by rockets, drones and other projectiles launched by armed groups. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the strike.

The attack came just a day after the US Embassy renewed its Level 4 travel advisory for Iraq, warning American citizens about potential threats in the region.

In the advisory issued, the embassy cautioned that Iran and several violent groups have previously targeted US citizens, infrastructure and interests in Iraq and could continue to do so.

The warning urged Americans not to travel to the country due to the ongoing security risks.

Earlier, The United States was forced to shut down its embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after drone strikes and escalating regional tensions following the joint US-Israeli bombardment of Iran.

The closures ordered on Monday, March 2, came amid retaliatory attacks by Tehran targeting American assets and regional allies across Middle east.
