WASHINGTON, DC: CNN analyst Van Jones, on Thursday’s appearance on TV, argued that  Graham Platner’s campaign for Maine is a “moment of Truth” for the Democratic Party.

During the latest episode of Anderson Cooper 360° on Thursday, June 4, Jones put forth his argument after eponymous host Anderson Cooper made note of Senator John Fetterman’s (D-PA) declaration that Platner is “behaving in a degenerate way.”

Fetterman had urged voters in Maine to vote for Governor Janet Mills in next Tuesday’s primary contest. Mills suspended her campaign in April.

Jones doubts Platner’s explanation on controversies

Jones argued that Platner's candidacy has become a test for Democrats, who must decide whether to hold their own candidates to the same standards they criticize in Republicans.

While acknowledging that some Democrats question why their party is often harsher on its own members than Republicans are on theirs, Jones said the issue was not only the allegations against Platner but also concerns about the credibility of his explanations.

“You know, it’s a moment of truth in this party. This is tough. You know, I think that I hear people in our party and they’re saying, ‘Why are we so tough on our bad guys when the Republicans are so soft on their bad guys.”

According to Jones, Platner has portrayed the behavior in question as part of his past, but recent reports have raised doubts about that narrative and fueled concerns that additional revelations could emerge.

He suggested that Platner's attempts to distance himself from the controversy have been undermined by inconsistencies in his account.

Platner deserves chance at redemption, says Jones

While noting his belief in second chances, Jones said he was troubled by what he viewed as inconsistencies in Platner's explanation of the allegations against him.

He argued that redemption requires honesty and accountability, adding that Democrats now face a difficult choice ahead of Maine's primary.

“I’m a second chances, third chances, fourth chances guy when you’re on a redemption arc for real — when you’ve taken real accountability, when you’ve actually owned up and you have a track record."

“Or at least you’re honest about where you are in your process.”

The CNN commentator concluded by saying Democrats now face a broader question about the standards they want to uphold within their own party.

“Do you want to sign off on the Donald Trump standard of behavior?” Jones asked.

“You’ve got some other people who have very bad behavior in the other party, is that now our standard in this party, or is it not? And I think people are going to have a tough choice in Maine.”
