MSG criticizes ‘party pooper’ Mayor Mamdani and NYPD over Knicks Game 4 street lockdown
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Madison Square Garden officials have slammed Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch as “party poopers” for maintaining a restrictive security lockdown around the arena for tKnicks' Game 4.
The organization argues that these "frozen zone" measures are suppressing fan celebrations and causing significant financial harm to local small businesses that rely on the surge of crowds during the NBA Finals.
MSG officials label security restrictions a 'convenient excuse' to block Knicks fans
MSG officials are furious that the city is continuing to block off several blocks around the arena, requiring fans to pass through metal detectors.
In a sharp statement given to the 'New York Post,' MSG officials said, “The last several victories the Knicks have had have been celebrated by thousands and thousands outside MSG. The joy and happiness were palpable everywhere. Apparently Mayor Mamdani and Police Commissioner Tisch, despite what they say, don’t want to see these celebrations happen.”
The arena added that the initial excuse of needing security for President Trump’s visit is no longer valid.
They stated, “We have been told that the NYPD will once again implement the same ‘frozen zone’ restrictions for Game 4, which were supposedly to thwart any threats related to the President’s attendance. We now know these restrictions were never about the President – it was just a convenient excuse to restrict how and when Knicks fans celebrate.”
City imposes strict capacity limits for Game 4 festivities
Although the city has approved a watch party for Game 4, it will be much smaller and more controlled than previous events.
While past parties outside the Garden drew up to 6,000 people, this event will only allow between 500 and 1,000 ticketed fans.
Mayor Mamdani defended the need for safety after recent playoff celebrations turned chaotic.
On X, he wrote, “As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence.”
He also added, “Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly. Knicks in 5.”

We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon.
As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence.

MSG calls on city to lift barriers and support local small businesses
The lockdown is causing major issues for small businesses near the arena, as fans are unable to reach the bars and restaurants they normally frequent.
Angela Reilly, who owns the Molly Wee Pub, said the security zone is hurting her bottom line. “Of course it’s bad for us. Especially a home game, we would be chockablocked,” she said, noting that she was not allowed to let fans watch the game through the windows.
MSG urged the Mayor and the Commissioner to change their minds for the sake of the neighborhood.
In their statement, the arena noted, “The complete closing of areas around MSG is going to affect not only the celebration but also all the small businesses that rely on Garden fans for their livelihood.”
They concluded by saying, “The actions of the Mayor and Police Commissioner, supposedly in support of the Knicks and their fans, are difficult to understand. We urge them to lift these restrictions and embrace the love of the team.”
