WASHINGTON, DC: Special counsel Robert Hur, who declined to execute President Joe Biden over classified materials found in his possession, resigned from the Justice Department a day before his appearance for the testimony to the House Judiciary Committee.

The former Donald Trump-appointed US attorney investigated Biden over classified documents found in his Delaware home and a former office in Washington, DC, and declined to charge him following the investigation.

Robert Hur to testify as a private citizen in his bombshell testimony

Hur, who was appointed by Attorney General Marrick Garland to lead the Biden probe, appeared as a private citizen in his testimony to the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, March 12.

At the request of Republicans led by Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Hur formally stepped down from DOJ, making his move "even more problematic," according to a Democratic Judiciary Committee source.

“That makes it even more problematic from our perspective ... if he was still a federal employee, DOJ would have to approve his testimony and they’d be involved in his appearance tomorrow,” the source revealed to The Independent.

Robert Hur criticized for calling Joe Biden 'elderly man with a poor memory'

Biden and the Democrats criticized Hur for calling Biden an "elderly man with a poor memory" in the report about the classified materials.

Explaining Hur's sudden resignation, Former Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said that the Justice Department "cannot give instructions" to a former employee about what he "can and cannot testify to."

Former US Attorney Harry Litman took to X (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on Hur's testimony.

"It’s hard not to anticipate some real ugliness with Robert Hur’s testimony,” he tweeted.

“He already showed his partisan colors in the inappropriate parts of his report. And he and the [Republicans] obviously contemplate he can vilify Biden now that he’s testifying as a ‘private citizen,’” Litman added.

Internet reacts to Robert Hur's sudden resignation before his testimony

Following Hur's resignation before his testimony on Tuesday, March 12, netizens weighed in on the special counsel's immediate decision.

"This whole process with him resigning the day prior feels very skanky. He is a slippery dude never to be trusted and always to be watched closely. He should never have been put in that position to begin with but muddy water under the bridge. Now we have to minimize the damage," a user wrote on X.

"So mysterious. Why did he resign the day before?!" another user tweeted.

"If he was going to follow the rules would he have quit and hired an attorney? So disappointing," a user opined while another wrote, "Why would he feel constrained by the rules?"

"Somebody should ask him why he resigned the day before his hearing. And remind him he is under oath," one user wrote on X.
