Internet divided as Special Counsel Robert Hur to testify on Joe Biden's report before House panel
WASHINGTON, DC: Special counsel Robert Hur will publicly testify before a GOP-led House Judiciary Committee led by Rep Jim Jordan on March 12 about his probe into President Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents, reported NBC News.
Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed the hearing and added that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer will also be allowed to take part.
Special counsel Hur released the bombshell report on February 8. Though he declined to prosecute Biden for mishandling classified materials, the report made controversy as it described the incumbent as an "elderly man with poor memory."
The hearing comes as the Republicans accused Hur of a "two-tiered system of justice" for not recommending charges against the President, whereas former President Donald Trump was indicted for withholding classified materials in his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after his presidential term.
Republicans eager to know more about Joe Biden's memory
The special counsel report raised concerns about 81-year-old Biden's capacity to carry out presidential duties and his ongoing reelection bid. Therefore, the GOP is looking forward to Hur's testimony to know more about the incumbent's cognitive ability and memory as the House is pushing forward an impeachment inquiry against Biden.
Furthermore, the three House Committee on February 12 asked the special counsel to turn over the recordings and transcripts from the interview with Biden that took place in October 2023, as per The Hill.
"Although Mr Hur reasoned that President Biden's presentation 'as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory' who "did not remember when he was vice president' or 'when his son Beau died' posed challenges to proving the President's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, the report concluded that the Department's principles of prosecution weighed against prosecution because the Department has not prosecuted 'a former President or vice president for mishandling classified documents from his own administration,'" House Oversight and Accountability Chair Rep James Comer, House Judiciary Chair Rep Jim Jordan, and House Ways and Means Chair Rep Jason Smith wrote in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The GOP-controlled House will look into the transcript to substantiate their claims of the Justice Department's preferential treatment towards First Son, Hunter Biden, when it worked with the IRS to investigate his tax payments and whether the President was involved in his son's overseas businesses.
