FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY: House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer was interviewed by Newsmax host Rob Schmitt on Wednesday, December 27, to detail the next steps in the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation after the first son defied a Congressional subpoena, earlier this month.

The leaders of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees requested the White House on Wednesday to provide information regarding President Biden's alleged involvement in his son Hunter Biden's refusal to comply with a congressional subpoena for a deposition, per a report by CBS News.

In a letter to White House counsel Edward Siskel, Rep James Comer and Jim Jordan have asked for documents and communications between White House staff in the Executive Office of the President and Hunter Biden, or his attorneys, regarding his scheduled deposition, which was originally planned for December 13, 2023.

However, Hunter Biden defied the subpoena from the Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview with lawmakers, appearing briefly outside the US Capitol to reiterate that he would answer questions only in a public setting.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre later confirmed that the president was "familiar with" what his son was going to say in his statement.

This request by the Republican leaders is significant as it expands the impeachment inquiry into the president.

The committee is seeking to determine whether the president interfered with his son's decision not to comply with the subpoena.

The provided documents and communications will be used to examine the extent of the sitting president's involvement in the matter.

What did James Comer say during his Newsmax interview on Wednesday?

Newsmax host Rob Schmitt asked the Kentucky congressman on his show ‘Rob Schmitt Tonight’ on Wednesday, “We're talking obstruction here. It seems pretty obvious when you listen to what Karine Jean-Pierre said, right, the day of, when Hunter had his big moment outside of the Senate. What exactly are you asking for from the White House?”

Comer replied, “Well, we want to ask for all communication between the White House and Abbe Lowell and the other lawyers that the president's son is employing. We believe that this was a coordinated effort. We believe that the White House has been colluding with Hunter Biden's legal team from day one to obstruct, to intimidate, and now to avert a lawful congressional subpoena.”

The Kentucky Republican added, “So these are all very serious offenses. The collusion with disobeying a congressional subpoena, that's actually an impeachable offense. So we've got a lot of problems with the White House. And the fact that Jean-Pierre admitted that the president knew what the son was going to do. That's pretty good evidence for me that the president was in on it.”

Schmitt asked, “If you're talking about impeachable offenses, we now know bribery seems very obvious at this point. You also have obstruction as well. Where are we at in this process? And is there any movement on contempt charges for Hunter Biden?”

Comer went on to detail the ongoing process, “Yeah, we've got the paperwork going for that. Obviously, it's a pretty long process to hold someone in contempt of Congress, but fortunately, we're working during this Christmas break. We should have everything ready to go when we reconvene next week in Washington, and hopefully we can hold him in contempt of Congress.”

He continued, “I told my colleagues in the Republican conference, if Hunter Biden doesn't comply with our subpoena, then we might as well throw the subpoena power away, because nobody's going to comply with the congressional subpoena. And the fact that the Democrats used their subpoenas for political reasons, for fishing expeditions. And here we have a credible investigation where we've been transparent with the American people.”

“We have mountains of evidence. Bank records don't lie. We have found that the president's family has taken in over $20 million from our adversaries around the world, and they cannot say one thing they did to receive the money. The fact that the president lied about his knowledge and involvement in his family's shady business schemes. I mean, this is the biggest political corruption story in my adult lifetime,” Comer stated.

He further added, “Hopefully, when we go back to Congress, we'll hold the president's son accountable. And remember, the president, in his own words, said that anyone who defied a congressional subpoena should be held accountable. That's exactly what we hope to do next week. But in the meantime, we're still doing transcribed interviews, we're still scheduling depositions."

Comer concluded his interview by saying, "January is going to be a very busy month in our investigation.”

Host Schmitt boiled down Comer’s statements from the interview and remarked, “Yeah. And the fact that Hunter is defying a subpoena speaks volumes. If they have all this defense, if they say it was all on the up and up, why are you defying a congressional subpoena to the point where you might be held in contempt?”

Internet slams James Comer

People on X were not charitable towards Comer, suggesting that the reason behind his impeachment inquiry taking this much time is purely down to him being unable to acquire solid evidence on the matter.

One X user quipped, "People who have mountains of evidence don't spend all their time on tv."

Another user asked, "So why don't they SHOW their mountains of evidence?"

Another user remarked, "Credible investigation? You have produced nothing."

One user stated, "I am astounded that he thinks it’s worthy to even suggest that the J6 investigation was a fishing expedition. Every time I think he couldn’t sink lower he proves me wrong. He has made a mockery of the House Oversight Committee."

Another X user said, "Oh no, here we go again with the Comer saga seasons edition. Kentucky, can you please send us representatives who are more coherent and sane?"

Finally, this user tweeted, "He has zero evidence lmao."
