CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA: In a heated exchange on Monday, February 20, Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) fired back at former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy after he mocked her office's alleged staffing issues, igniting a public spat that shed light on divisions within the Republican Party.

Mace, one of the eight House Republicans involved in McCarthy's ousting from his role as a speaker, labeled him a "loser" and "disgraced former speaker," urging supporters to contribute to her reelection campaign.

Kevin McCarthy says Nancy Mace needs to 'straighten out her life'

During his recent Capitol Hill visit, McCarthy took aim at hardline GOP members, including Mace, who played a role in his removal from leadership.

While interacting with the press, he stated, "I hope Nancy gets the help she needs, I really do. I just hope she gets the help to straighten out her life. I mean, she’s got a lot of challenges."

McCarthy criticized Mace's leadership style, citing a turnover in her DC office staff since November 2023, and questioning her commitment to principled governance.

The former House Speaker claimed, "No one will stay working for her. You can’t have somebody who just flips and flops based on what TV station she gets put on. You want someone who’s willing to work, and so I hope she gets that kind of help."

McCarthy's remarks referenced a Daily Beast report detailing complaints from former staffers about a toxic work environment allegedly fostered by Mace's leadership.

One such ex-staffer, Dan Hanlon, who was let go in December 2023, has since launched a bid against the South Carolina Rep in her home district, further complicating her reelection prospects.

Nancy Mace urges supporters to help her raise money to hit back at 'corrupt' people like Kevin McCarthy

In response, Mace took to social media, declaring that she was "living rent-free" in McCarthy's head and soliciting donations to combat the "corrupt DC establishment."

"I heard the former speaker—disgraced former speaker—was talking a lot of smack this week and said that I need help. Well, guess what? I do need help," declared the South Carolina Rep in a clip.

She further said, "I need your help to raise a dollar, $5, $10, $100 for my campaign to hit back against the establishment, to hit back against corrupt DC, to hit back against people like McCarthy."

"He put our majority at risk. He lied to the American people. He couldn’t even hold his speakership because he’s a loser," continued Mace, adding, "So, yeah, Kevin—I need help. I need help to raise money so I can hit back at you and your handpicked opponent, who’s now your puppet running in South Carolina against me."

Mace and McCarthy's feud reflects broader divisions within the GOP, with Mace citing differences in women's issues as one reason for her role in McCarthy's removal.

His ousting in October 2023 led to a prolonged leadership vacuum in the House, culminating in the election of Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA) as speaker after more than three weeks of deadlock.

Internet reacts to Nancy Mace's response to Kevin McCarthy's criticisms

Soon after Mace launched her attack on McCarthy, netizens were quick to put the Rep in her place.

One remarked, "Umm, Nancy, you do need help," and another stated, "You will get zero help from me. You kissed the MAGA ring, go ask them. Oh wait they are busy paying Trump’s legal bills."

A person stated, "Last time, you were fighting against Trump, and now you're fighting against the establishment. Pick a side!"

"Thanks for the reminder. I just donated to your opponent," added someone else.

An individual chimed in, "I really hope you are voted out of office. You are a grifter, trying to get money at any cost. You do need some help."

Mace remains resolute in her bid for reelection, facing a formidable primary challenge from attorney Catherine Templeton.

Her opponent recently said, "We need a consistent conservative who doesn’t flip-flop for fame," prompting the South Carolina Rep to describe her as "nothing more than a puppet in Kevin McCarthy’s bitter revenge operation."

The GOP primary for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District is set to take place on June 11, as per The Hill.
