COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace criticized her party, highlighting a perceived lack of compassion towards women as the primary cause of GOP losses.

Talking to Fox News on Sunday, December 31, 2023, the South Carolina lawmaker called out the party's stand regarding the Texas Supreme Court denial of an emergency abortion to Kate Cox, whose fetus had a fatal genetic condition.

Stressing that the party is losing the fight on abortion, Mace said, "Republicans are losing because we are not being compassionate to women. We are throwing it back in their face." Pointing out Cox's case, she added the ruling was "emotional," and any woman who turned 18 should have the right to make that decision for herself and not the state.

"Bureacocrats on a panel in Texas should decide what she should do because that is a very intimate and painful decision for women," she continued.

Cox's case made headlines and refreshed the debates on abortion rights in a post-Roe v Wade nation where the 21-week pregnant Dallas woman decided to do the procedure outside Texas.

Nancy Mace emphasizes necessity of conversation on access to birth control

To reduce the number of abortions in the country, Mace argued that serious conversations regarding how women can have greater access to birth control are necessary.

Pointing out the pathetic condition of her home state, South Carolina, where 14 counties "don't have a single OBGYN doctor."

"How are they supposed to get access to birth control?" the Congresswoman questioned.

Mace further recalled her trauma of being raped at the age of 16, which makes abortion a personal thing to her as she was aware of the pain a woman goes through in such a situation.

Besides being compassionate and supportive of those women, she added that she is "in favor of the idea that women who choose to have an abortion" should get the "counseling that they need afterward so that they don't make that decision again."

This is not the first time a GOP member has spoken against the party's attitude toward abortion. Previously, Senator JD Vance also opined that the party's policies on abortion might cause them an election failure.

Internet reacts to Nancy Mace's comments

Internet users have mixed reactions to Mace's views on abortion and her party's take on that. Though some supported her for understanding the issue, most blamed her for not using any opportunity to support the cause when given a chance.

One user remarked, "The rare moment of self awareness."

Another user noted, "Finally someone in her party gets it."

"She ain't wrong," read another response. While a fourth user added, "She just woke up."

However a fifth user pointed out, "She speaks out of both sides of her mouth. Then votes with tge far right side …"

"And she continues to vote against women every single time she’s given the opportunity to. She is part of the problem," said one user. Another user also opined the same, "She’s been vocal about not liking how restrictive the right is getting but hasn’t really voted to support women."
