WASHINGTON, DC: Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has confirmed that she has reconnected with former President Joe Biden after a prolonged rift, which arose over her perceived involvement in his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
The development comes after months of reported tension between the two longtime political allies. Pelosi addressed the matter in a recent interview with MS NOW on Tuesday, March 31, shedding light on her role and their renewed communication.
Nancy Pelosi responds to backlash over Joe Biden campaign exit role
During an interview, Nancy Pelosi responded to questions by host Ali Vitali about whether Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race would factor into her legacy. She acknowledged that many people “credit or blame” her for how the campaign ended, but insisted she received more attention than warranted.
She said, "Well, I don’t know, how can I say this in a nice way? The Biden administration accomplished great things. People compared him to Lyndon B Johnson (LBJ) in terms of the amount and the quality and quantity of accomplishments."
Pelosi continued, "And that is that I wanted him to have other pollsters at the table than just listening to one, and B, I wanted him to assure the public that he could serve the term, They didn’t agree with that, and so he then decided to step aside; it was his decision.”
Vitali then asked the lawmaker whether she had spoken with Biden. “Yes, we have,” she said. “I’d rather, it’d be up to him to tell people when we spoke.” Vitali also reported that they recently had lunch together.
Pelosi was widely viewed as a key influence in Biden’s decision to exit the race, particularly after a July 2024 appearance on 'Morning Joe,' where she suggested he was still weighing his options despite his earlier public statement that he intended to remain in the campaign.
Nancy Pelosi praises Kamala Harris campaign as comeback talk grows
Biden ultimately withdrew from the race and endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. In a December 2025 interview, Pelosi noted that she and Biden had still not spoken at the time, though she expressed understanding about the situation.
“Well, I’m saddened by it because I love him and respect him, but I respect his decision in that regard,” Pelosi said. She also commended Harris’ campaign, describing her historically short election effort as “great.”
Pelosi further added, “She turned out so many more people than who would have voted, I think she doesn’t deserve enough credit for the outcome of the election in terms of, we would have lost probably 14 seats in that election if she had not been the candidate.”
Harris said in an interview with BBC last year that she may consider another run for the White House. In her first UK interview, she stated she could “possibly” become president one day and expressed confidence that a woman will eventually hold the office.
Offering her clearest indication yet of a potential 2028 presidential bid following her loss to President Donald Trump, Harris downplayed polling that positioned her as an unlikely Democratic nominee.
While emphasizing that she has not made a final decision, Harris made it clear she still envisions a future in public service. She said, “I am not done, I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it's in my bones.”
