ALBANY, NEW YORK: The Department of Justice has launched an investigation targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The probe centers on whether her office violated Donald Trump's civil rights in the civil fraud case that resulted in a multimillion-dollar penalty against the president.

Two subpoenas issued to Letitia James’ office

According to sources who spoke to Fox News Digital, the inquiry, based in Albany, is focused on potential “deprivation of rights” allegations and comes amid a wider pattern of escalating legal tension between the president and Letitia James.

Two subpoenas have reportedly been issued to James' office, one directly linked to the civil fraud case that led to Trump being ordered to pay over $454 million.

Justice Arthur Engoron ruled against the former president finding him liable for conspiring to manipulating his networth and fining him $335 million and imposing a three year ban from serving in top roles at any NY company. The second subpoena is related to the attorney general’s ongoing case against the National Rifle Association.

James sued the NRA in 2020, which ultimately led to the removal of its longtime executive, Wayne LaPierre, and weakened the organization’s political influence.

James, a Democrat, has also clashed with the Trump administration in court over various executive actions.

In a statement, James’ attorney Abbe Lowell said on Friday, August 8, “Weaponizing the Department of Justice to try to punish an elected official for doing her job is an attack on the rule of law and a dangerous escalation by this administration.”

Lowell added that if prosecutors were “genuinely interested in the truth, we are ready and waiting with facts and the law.”

Letitia James has filed lawsuits challenging Trump administration’s policies

Letitia James began investigating the Trump Organization soon after assuming office in 2018.

Her 2022 civil fraud suit against Trump culminated in a New York judge ruling that Trump and two of his sons greatly exaggerated the value of assets to obtain loans and financial advantages.

“Financial fraud is not a victimless crime,” James said at the time. “If average New Yorkers went into a bank and submitted false documents, the government would throw the book at them, and the same should be true for former presidents,” she added.

James’ legal battles against Trump go beyond fraud claims. She has also filed lawsuits challenging the administration’s policies on transgender health care for minors, social program spending freezes, and federal employee dismissals.

Donald Trump called Letitia James a ‘wacky crook’ amid grand jury developments

Letitia James was issued grand jury subpoenas in a separate inquiry connected to mortgage fraud.

This followed an April request by the Trump-led Federal Housing Finance Agency asking Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate James.

James has denied the mortgage fraud allegations, and Trump responded on Truth Social, saying, "Letitia James, a totally corrupt politician, should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General, IMMEDIATELY. Everyone is trying to MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN, and it can never be done with this wacky crook in office."

Internet divided as DOJ launches probe into Letitia James

Reactions across social media have largely followed party lines.

Supporters of Trump welcomed the probe into James, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) writing, “She was part of the deep state that went after Trump to try to sway an election. She should be charged and serve time.”

Another user posted, “Finally, justice for Letitia's wild witch hunt is around the corner,” while one more wrote, “That’s great, she needs to pay for her conspiracy.”

A supporter on Facebook cheered, calling the move "his revenge," while another said, "She deserves everything she gets!"

Still, a few voices expressed discomfort. “Cmon man. We are better than this,” wrote one user, with another saying, "He has to be stopped he is guilty as hell."

A person added, “Trump’s DOJ is charging Letitia James with ‘deprivation of rights’ — while he’s the one actually stripping them away. Projection isn’t a defense. It’s a confession.”
