WASHINGTON, DC: California Gov Gavin Newsom took aim at congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump after photos emerged from the White House’s newly unveiled “Rose Garden Club.”

The event, held on Septembe 5, drew top GOP lawmakers who posted glowing tributes online to Trump’s hospitality.

Newsom framed the gathering as tone-deaf amid the nation’s economic struggles.

“Our economy is in a downward spiral, but don’t worry — the @GOP are spending their time cheersing Diet Cokes at a new, exclusive ‘club,’” Newsom wrote on X, reposting House Speaker Mike Johnson’s enthusiastic recap.

Johnson had praised the event as “epic” and lauded Trump for his “visionary leadership.”

Trump’s new club in the Rose Garden

At the dinner, Trump officially introduced the “Rose Garden Club,” describing it as a gathering place for lawmakers, Washington insiders, and, in his words, “people that can bring peace and success to our country.”

He explained that he had planned to host high-profile tech executives — including Apple’s Tim Cook, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg — but rain forced him to move that event indoors the night before.

“I had the high-tech guys here, and they didn’t want to have rain on top of their beautiful heads,” Trump quipped.

The Rose Garden itself has undergone a striking transformation under Trump. The president ordered the grassy expanse to be paved over, adding stone flooring, umbrella-covered tables, and banquet seating.

The redesign drew immediate comparisons to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Internet reacts after Newsom slams Trump’s ‘Rose Garden Club’ at White House

California Gov Gavin Newsom (D) criticized the White House “Rose Garden Club” dinner attended by Trump and Republican lawmakers, calling it a tone-deaf display during shaky economic times. But online reaction was swift — and largely unforgiving toward Newsom.

In a move to counter Texas House Republicans’ plan to redraw the state’s congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, California Democrats took up a proposed constitutional amendment to temporarily redraw their own congressional maps, potentially creating five additional U.S. House seats for their party. One user wrote, “Jealousy is not helping your staff post this drivel.” Another added, “Every post, you make more Republicans, keep up the great work!"

Others turned the criticism back on the governor. “California has a $1.6 trillion debt. The rest of America is doing great. You’re the failure, Newscum,” one wrote.

Another reminded him of past controversies: “Just like when you kept a bunch of restaurants open during Covid just for you and your family?”

One jabbed, “Don’t be jealous Gavin. You still have your French Laundry on this side of the coast.”

Others mocked his tone: “Oh that’s a good one. And during Covid you went unmasked to drink some wine with friends. I say cheers, enjoy the Diet Cokes. Gavin, your entire life has been a show.”
