NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Commissioner George Teal of Douglas County, Colorado, joined co-host Lawrence Jones to talk about the direct action approach of his community to combat the migrant crisis on Thursday, April 4 episode of 'Fox & Friends.'

Home to a large Republican population, Douglas County strongly opposes becoming a sanctuary city and passed a new ordinance that puts bus companies on notice not to stop or drop off illegal immigrants in the community.

The Douglas County bus ban

According to the ordinance passed by the Board of Douglas County Commissioners on Tuesday, April 2, buses may face '$1,000 fine per passenger at unscheduled stops', 'bus companies could face fines up to $40,000', and the 'sheriff can seize bus,' under the name of 'public nuisance.'

"No more freeloading," Teal told Jones. "We thought this ordinance was required to make sure that we can keep our community safe."

The legislation comes in the face of Denver being overflown by migrants after declaring itself to be a sanctuary city.

"Denver got on the bandwagon of the anti-Trump fad of declaring a sanctuary city early, among Democrat cities across the nation. We're not a Democrat county. We're a community that is mostly Republican. We were never going to be a sanctuary county," stated Teal.

"We know that it's just a matter of time before Denver starts diverting buses here into Douglas County. We’re to the south of Denver — right between Denver and Colorado Springs. And that's why we did this ordinance, so that, when that happens, we’re prepared," he added.

Migrant crisis in Denver

The sanctuary city of Denver is reportedly under financial strain as a result of the migrant crisis, reported Fox News. As a result, the city is scaling back its services.

Back in February, Mike Johnston announced the closure of four migrant shelters in the city and the objective of reallocating nearly $60 million back into city services. However, he assured that the migrants who lived in those shelters would not be left homeless, and instead be moved to different facilities.

According to Teal, the declaration of sanctuary cities was a "fad" attempting to push back against former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

"As we've all checked and found out, President Trump isn't the president anymore — at least not yet, again," he mentioned. "Right now it's President Biden, one of their own Democrats. And yet they still continue these policies that they’re starting to regret."
