WASHINGTON, DC: Questions surrounding Minnesota's handling of taxpayer-funded programs took a dramatic turn Monday, June 8, after Vice President JD Vance announced he is referring Gov Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to the Department of Justice for a criminal fraud investigation.

The move follows a congressional review that alleged massive losses tied to state-administered programs and accused top officials of failing to act despite warning signs.

While no criminal charges have been filed, the referral significantly raises the political and legal stakes.

Vance orders federal review of allegations

The vice president revealed the decision after receiving a request tied to findings from House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, whose committee has been examining allegations of fraud involving Minnesota programs that received federal funding.

Rather than treating the matter as a political dispute, Vance said the allegations now warrant scrutiny from federal investigators.

"I've referred these allegations to DOJ's new Fraud Division for criminal investigation," Vance wrote on social media.

He added that any public official found to have facilitated fraud, misled investigators, or retaliated against whistleblowers should be held accountable.

"Minnesota state officials are not above the law," Vance said.

At the center of the controversy is a House Oversight Committee report that claims hundreds of millions of federal dollars may have been lost through fraud, abuse, or inadequate oversight.

The report alleges that approximately $300 million connected to child nutrition programs was lost, while billions more in Medicaid-related funding may have been exposed to serious risk.

Republicans argue the findings raise difficult questions about what state leaders knew as concerns mounted and whether enough was done to stop potential misuse of taxpayer money.

The report specifically points to Walz and Ellison as officials who were in positions of authority while the alleged failures occurred.

Walz's denial of allegations

The referral comes after months of political fighting over fraud investigations in Minnesota.

Walz has previously dismissed some Republican-led accusations as politically motivated and questioned whether certain investigations were being used as partisan weapons.

At the same time, concerns over fraud have become a major issue in state politics, prompting efforts to strengthen penalties and expand prosecutors' ability to pursue fraud-related offenses.

The governor also unveiled proposals earlier this year aimed at tightening anti-fraud enforcement and increasing accountability measures.

A referral to the Justice Department does not automatically trigger criminal charges, nor does it establish wrongdoing by those named.

Federal investigators will now determine whether the allegations merit further action and whether evidence exists to support claims contained in the congressional report.
