BRONX, NEW YORK: Rep Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) has faced allegations of inconsistency regarding his stances on Israel, per the New York Post.

The progressive "Squad" member has been accused of publicly expressing condemnation “in the strongest possible terms” for an anti-Israel protest backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), only to reportedly change his position during a private endorsement interview with the DSA.

Before the May 26 endorsement interview, Bowman took advantage of the opportunity and proudly mentioned that he had let his DSA membership expire after a previous disagreement with the organization regarding his visit to Israel to vote in favor of the country's defense funding.

This change in position has sparked concerns about the credibility of his public statements and his affiliation with the DSA.

The reported discrepancies in his statements have garnered attention as he navigates a challenging political battle against Democratic Party challenger George Latimer.

What did Congressman Jamaal Bowman say during his DSA interview?

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that Rep Bowman affirmed his active membership status during the private endorsement interview, saying, “I’m still a member. … I didn’t let my dues lapse.”

Despite being a two-term incumbent, Rep Bowman has refrained from publicly expressing support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which some pro-Israel activists consider antisemitic due to its perceived aim of economically targeting the Jewish state in support of Palestinian interests.

In the DSA endorsement interview, Bowman revealed that he "personally" backs the BDS movement but admitted that he hasn't publicly announced his support because of the significant Jewish, Zionist, pro-Israel, and AIPAC populations in his 16th Congressional district, which covers much of Westchester County and the north Bronx.

The Democratic lawmaker expressed his desire to make his support public “at some point” to encourage discussions that promote "peace and justice and safety and humanity for all people."

“BDS. is a nonviolent protest opportunity to hold Israel accountable,” Bowman stated during the interview, adding. “And I think Israel needs to be held accountable. And so I’m ready, willing and able to collaborate with you all to figure out what’s the best way to do that.”

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

Congressman Bowman, previously supportive of Iron Dome defense funding for Israel, has shifted his stance and now aligns with the BDS campaign against Israel.

He attributed his initial vote for Iron Dome funding to assuring his constituents of his support for the Jewish people, stating that he did not want his decision to be misconstrued as a stance advocating harm against the Jewish community.

“I didn’t want my ‘no’ vote to be misinterpreted as ‘I want Jews to be killed,’” he explained to the DSA members.

Bowman conveyed his change in position during the DSA meeting last month, citing Israel's response to Hamas' attack on the Jewish State as the primary reason for his revised stance, accusing Israel of perpetrating "genocide" in Gaza.

“There’s no way I could support any of that because there’s a genocide happening in Gaza,” he remarked during his endorsement interview.

Rep Bowman faces an arduous Democratic primary challenge from Westchester County Executive George Latimer, who is supported by pro-Israel groups.

Latimer is a vocal opponent of the BDS campaign and advocates for Iron Dome funding.

Recent polling by Emerson College/Pix 11/The Hill indicates Latimer leading 48% to 31% with a 17-point margin over Bowman, with 21% of respondents remaining undecided.

Supporters of George Latimer branded Rep Bowman a craven liar in a desperate attempt to win his re-election.

Mark Mellman, Chairman of Democratic Majority for Israel, asserted, “That Congressman Bowman admits to having lied to get re-elected is a sad commentary on his character. His hostility to the truth is only matched by his hostility toward his own constituents — all of them — and President Biden.”

Internet slams Rep Jamaal Bowman for flip-flopping on his Israel stance

People online lambasted the Democratic congressman who is being accused of lying about his positions on Israel in light of their conflict with Hamas.

One person commented, "Bowman is willing to stand for something so long as there are no consequences."

Another person said, "Brotha bout to learn, you don't support the Zionists then AIPAC gonna crush you."

A person claimed, "Opposing the Iron Dome means he’s unhappy Hamas and Iran rockets aren’t effective at killing more Jews. Iron Dome is defensive, not offensive."

One person remarked, "Lying before elections is what Democrats do."

Another person argued, "Notice who is in the picture behind him, the rest of the stench that needs to be voted out, 'The Squad.' Complete mind-bending how they are claiming to be American but have such divisive and very opposite of American they preach hate more than solutions. What is the 'Squad' there is nothing they they have done to vote in or help their districts in any state. Dems have sacrificed the people to long for their benefits, and failed politics." [sic]

Finally, this person wrote, "vote Bowman out." [sic]
