Pam Bondi appeared armed with 'opposition research' during tense DOJ hearing, says legal expert
WASHINGTON, DC: In an assessment of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s recent House Judiciary Committee testimony, legal experts observed that Bondi appeared to have come prepared with the "equivalent of opposition research" on Democrats.
The hearing, which was intended to address the Department of Justice's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, instead turned into what experts described as a partisan "reality show."
Experts say Pam Bondi utilized ‘opposition research’
MSNOW senior legal reporter Lisa Rubin, on Wednesday, February 11, during an MS Now discussion on the hearing, highlighted a specific moment involving Representative Zoe Lofgren as evidence of Bondi’s prepared defensive approach.
When Lofgren pressed for details on the Epstein files, Bondi pivoted to an accusation regarding campaign contributions from a Silicon Valley billionaire.
"One of the reasons that Bondi's behavior is so aberrational here is that she seems to have come prepared with the equivalent of opposition research on Democratic members so that when any member who is on the Democratic side is asking her a question and the questioning turns hostile, she then lobs an accusation against them," Rubin explained.
She added, "It's as if one of those binders is filled with bullet points on each and every member."
Peter Baker criticizes Pam Bondi hearing conduct
According to New York Times Chief White House Correspondent Peter Baker, the attorney general’s conduct, which included calling members of Congress "hypocrite" and a "joke," marked a major departure from how Cabinet officers usually act.
Peter Baker characterized the attorney general’s behavior as a performative display designed for President Trump rather than the public or the committee.
He argued that the factual information typically derived from such hearings has been replaced by a search for "viral moments" for social media.
"I've never seen, though, cabinet officers come to a congressional hearing, even one that's hostile like this and act in the way that this attorney general has acted," Baker noted.
He warned that the Justice Department is increasingly being viewed as a "partisan instrument of power, rather than a neutral arbiter of justice."
Former prosecutor warns Pam Bondi harms DOJ credibility
Furthermore, former federal prosecutor Brendan Ballew warned that the “tone” displayed by Bondi would have a negative effect on the department’s reputation among career prosecutors and judges.
Ballew advised that insulting those asking tough questions is a failing strategy in any legal or oversight setting.
"There are other people watching this, in particular line-level prosecutors within the Department of Justice and judges that are going to be overseeing these cases," Ballew said.
He concluded that such performances contribute to a "larger sort of erasure or attack on the longstanding credibility of DOJ."
