WASHINGTON, DC: Nancy Pelosi has said that Democrats are not actively pursuing a third impeachment of President Donald Trump, countering Republican claims of an imminent effort. She emphasized that any move toward impeachment would depend on Trump’s actions, not party strategy, and repeatedly said Trump forced Democrats into the previous impeachments.

The former House Speaker also offered a strong endorsement of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, signaling her focus on helping Democrats regain the House majority in 2026.

“I’ve said to people, the one person who was responsible for the impeachments of Donald Trump is Donald Trump,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) told ABC News’ “This Week” in an interview that aired Sunday, December 28.

Pelosi clarified that impeachment is triggered by constitutional violations, not partisan strategy.

“It’s not something you decide to do. It’s what violation of the Constitution he engages in. So that’s not something you say, ‘Oh, we’re gonna impeach him,'” she said.

Multiple Democrats, including Reps. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) and Al Green (D-Texas), have already attempted to impeach Trump. Democratic leadership has publicly discouraged those efforts.

Many Trump allies and Republicans have claimed that Democrats plan a third impeachment if they regain control of the House in the 2026 midterm, which they are currently expected to do.

If Democrats regain the House, they would wield control over powerful investigatory committees and increase scrutiny of the Trump administration and the president’s family.

“Right now, the Republicans and the Congress have abolished the Congress. They just do what the president insists that they do. That will be over,” Pelosi said.

“You can have the power of subpoena to get information from these agencies of government who are not supplying any information,” she later emphasized.

Nancy Pelosi Pelosi endorses Hakeem Jeffries for House Speaker

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi expressed confidence that Democrats will retake the House in 2026 and that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will become Speaker in January 2027.

“Hakeem Jeffries is ready, he’s eloquent, he’s respected by the members, he is a unifier,” Pelosi said.

She added that her priority remains helping Democrats regain the majority. “I'm busy and focused on winning the House for the Democrats, making Hakeem Jeffries the Speaker of the House,” Pelosi said.
