WASHINGTON, DC: Jennifer Hegseth, the wife of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and a former Fox News producer, played a significant role in the Pentagon’s efforts to restrict journalists’ access to the building, according to a report by The New York Times.

Two people familiar with the matter told the outlet that she was eager to revoke credentials from reporters who she believed had published negative stories about her husband. The report also described her as Hegseth’s “most influential adviser,” with involvement in staffing, media preparation and high-level meetings.

Jennifer Hegseth reportedly pushed Pentagon press restrictions

According to the report, Jennifer encouraged her husband to take a more combative approach toward the press and worked with him on efforts to restrict reporters’ access to the Pentagon.

“Mrs Hegseth was eager to revoke the credentials of Pentagon reporters who she felt had written negative stories about her husband,” the newspaper reported, citing two unnamed sources.

The report comes after the Pentagon introduced new rules governing journalists’ access to the building. Last year, credentialed reporters were required to agree to new terms that restricted how they could gather and report information from the department, prompting several major news organizations to reject the conditions and voluntarily surrender their press credentials.

After a court order struck down key provisions of the policy, the Pentagon introduced revised restrictions requiring reporters to be escorted by Defense Department officials while inside the building. The department also closed the Correspondents’ Corridor, a longstanding workspace and gathering point for Pentagon reporters.

Pete Hegseth’s wife has taken on broader role at Pentagon

The outlet’s report also described Jennifer’s broader involvement in her husband’s work. She reportedly helped prepare him for public appearances, participated in interviews with prospective staff members and attended meetings with senior officials.

A former Pentagon spokesperson, John Ullyot, told the newspaper that Jennifer conducted a one-on-one interview with him that was “unexpectedly detailed” and included “hard-edged questions.”

Her involvement has also extended to sensitive government settings. She was present during a meeting between Pete Hegseth and British defense officials last year after the United States temporarily halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

A Trump administration official said that the British officials spoke in general terms because Jennifer’s presence “made them uneasy.” Jennifer was also included in a Signal group chat in which her husband shared plans for a US military operation in Yemen.

Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, questioned her access last year, saying, “This is not normal. Secretary Hegseth has one of the highest levels of classification access. He can’t just hand that to his wife and say, ‘Here, honey, hold my beer, and hold my classified information.’”

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended Jennifer, calling her “an accomplished leader in her own right and a devoted military spouse” and saying she was a “vital asset” to the department. He added that she was not present when classified information was discussed.
