LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Director Peter Jackson has revisited the long-discussed recasting of Ryan Gosling from ‘The Lovely Bones’, offering new context on what led to the decision nearly two decades later.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, May 13, Jackson said the situation reflected a broader mismatch in creative vision and casting alignment rather than a single factor.
Peter Jackson reflects on Ryan Gosling exit from ‘The Lovely Bones’ casting decision
During the interview, Peter Jackson addressed the casting controversy and said the responsibility for recasting ultimately lies with filmmakers.
Without directly criticizing Ryan Gosling, he explained that when a performance no longer matches the intended direction of a film, it signals that the casting choice itself was incorrect.
Reacting to the statements, one user wrote, “Sorry but I'm taking fat Gosling with a peg leg and a broken nose over Mark Wahlberg ten times out of ten.”

Peter Jackson says casting misalignment led to Ryan Gosling recast in ‘The Lovely Bones’
Peter Jackson stated, "I won't talk about any particular examples of actors because it's a personal, private thing and it's not their fault, Anytime we recast an actor, it's actually our fault because we didn't get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role."
He continued, "It's not because they did anything wrong. So, I'm not going to talk about individuals, but you just got to realize that what you were imagining isn't really quite happening, which means that we got it wrong and so we take full responsibility."
He further said, "Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we know. Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera, They're chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film. It's just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character."
He concluded, "It's complicated and usually you try very hard when you're planning the film, casting it, trying to get that gel kind of right, but occasionally we make our own mistakes."
The controversy dates back to 2010, when Ryan Gosling revealed that he had gained around 60 pounds while preparing to portray Jack Salmon in ‘The Lovely Bones’.
Gosling said he believed the character should physically appear heavier and admitted he and Peter Jackson had “a different idea” about the role’s interpretation.
He also noted that limited communication during preproduction contributed to the misunderstanding, which ultimately led to his removal shortly before filming began.
