NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Amid the infectious cheer of the holiday season, the discussion on 'The View' turned deep and serious as White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dropped by and engaged in a conversation about the economy with host Sara Haines.

The interaction, which was uploaded on the social media platform X, took place on the episode which aired on December 5.

Haines broached the subject by highlighting, "The economy will be a big focus for voters in 2024, as it normally is. And under President Biden, inflation is down, wage growth and GDP are up, the [endowment] is nearing all-time high."

"But it's not doing much to lessen people's anxiety about pocketbook issues like lowering food prices, college tuitions, and paying off debts," she continued, asking, "So what is [President Biden] doing to address this disconnect?"

Karine Jean-Pierre began by addressing the low prices

The Press Secretary began by thanking Haines for listing out all the achievements of the present administration and "what the President has done to make sure that the economy gets back on its feet."

The co-host mentioned gas prices being down, to which the guest readily agreed, reminding viewers and the hosts that it had gone up previously as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which she termed as "Putin's war."

Jean Pierre launched into her explanation, saying, "When the President got into the White House… the economy was in a tailspin."

She explained how Covid had put the economy under stress and the incumbent president had to fix that. Jean-Pierre claimed that this was because "the last administration did not have a comprehensive plan."

The press secretary further pointed out that prices have continued to go down on daily essentials and food items even during the holidays, claiming, "The prices have gone down, went down on turkey, went down on eggs, went down on goods that Americans truly need."

White House Press Secretary talks about taking on pharmaceutical companies

"For decades, elected officials have talked about beating big pharma… being able to lower the cost for prescription drugs. This is a President that has been able to get that done," said Jean-Pierre.

"Whether it's insulin at 35%, or now Medicare being able to negotiate with big pharma to lower the cost. Those are the things we have been able to do under the leadership of this President and we are going to continue to talk about it," she continued.

She concluded her answer by noting, "It is important, not just in '24 but it is right now. It takes a little bit of time — economic experts have said that — to feel everything…but we have to continue to talk about it and we will."
