NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Prince Harry returned to the US spotlight on Wednesday, September 23, to speak about artificial intelligence and its impact on children at the Clinton Global Initiative.

However, his speech took an unexpected turn when a technical failure forced him to leave the stage just minutes after he began speaking.

The Duke of Sussex, 42, had been warning about the risks of technology and how AI could affect relationships when the interruption occurred.

Harry returned around 40 minutes later and joked about the timing of the problem before continuing his speech.

Harry had been speaking about AI from the perspective of a father when the technical issue brought his remarks to a sudden stop.

“I come to this as a father,” Harry said while discussing concerns he had heard from other parents. He spoke about parents mourning children who, according to his remarks, had been affected by technology that was “recklessly built.”

Roughly seven minutes into his speech, Harry was forced to leave the stage.

The interruption came as he discussed the growing influence of technology and the role of major tech companies. His appearance had focused on the risks children and families face as artificial intelligence continues to develop.

Harry was eventually able to return to the stage around 40 minutes later and continue his remarks.

His first words after returning were a joke about what had just happened.

“Hello again,” Harry said. “So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it. Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”

The unexpected moment gave the speech a different turn, particularly because Harry had been warning about the growing reach of AI when the technical failure occurred.

After returning to the stage, Harry continued to share his concerns about the direction of artificial intelligence and the influence of technology on people's lives.

The prince warned that tech companies aim to “find you, hook you, exploit you, break and then blame you.”

He also focused on the difference between traditional social media and newer AI systems.

“Social media learned how to capture our attention. AI is learning how to enter our relationships,” Harry said. “It doesn’t just want your attention; it wants your attachment. It wants to be the thing you confide in.”

Harry described AI as the “ultimate sycophant” and warned that technology is moving faster than researchers can keep up.

He also returned to the subject of children and grieving families, showing images of children as he spoke.

“And as a father, I will remind you of the faces that accompanied me the last time I stood before you,” Harry said.

“Hundreds have become thousands. Thousands of parents grieving their children. Millions of families are living with the consequences of a digital revolution that moved faster than our willingness to protect them.”

His comments highlighted his continued focus on protecting young people from the potential risks of technology.

Prince Harry returns to New York after moving to UK

Harry’s appearance in New York came only weeks after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, moved back to the UK for an “extended period.”

The couple moved their family to the UK in August and are now residing outside London. They will not return as working royals in Britain.

Despite the move, Harry returned to New York this week for the Clinton Global Initiative, where he appeared alongside former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

The event marked another public appearance for Harry in the US following his family's move.

Harry had also spoken at the forum in 2024, when he raised concerns about the influence of social media companies and described them as “dangerously powerful.”

His latest appearance focused more heavily on artificial intelligence and its potential impact on children and families.
