WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris is known for her passion for sports and has shown support for her alma mater, Howard University, by attending both the Celebration Bowl in December and the university's first-round NCAA men's basketball tournament game last year.

However, a recent comment made by VP Harris regarding the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament has garnered attention, as she appeared to suggest that the tournament only introduced brackets in the last couple of years.

According to sources cited by the New York Post, Harris was likely referring to the year that the NCAA women's tournament was branded as March Madness, which occurred in 2022.

What did Kamala Harris say regarding women’s basketball tournament?

Vice President Kamala Harris told Spectrum News, "Do you know — OK, a bit of a history lesson — do you know that the women’s teams were not allowed to have brackets until 2022? Think about that, and talk about progress, ya know, better late than never, but progress."

In recent times, Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, JuJu Watkins, Paige Bueckers, Madison Booker, and several other prominent players have garnered unprecedented attention toward women's college basketball, according to Fox News.

While Harris seemed to reaffirm her misjudgment concerning the bracket, she also expressed optimism about women's sports gaining more exposure.

"We love March Madness, and even just now allowing the women to have brackets and what that does to encourage people to talk more about the women’s teams, to watch them, now they’re being covered. This is the reality,” the Vice President of the United States remarked.

“People used to say, ‘Women’s sports, who’s interested?’ Well, if you can’t see it, you won’t be. But when you see it, you realize, ‘Oh, we’re talking about star athletes who are incredibly gifted'. … It’s nice we are finally giving women in sports that kind of platform. I find it so exciting," she said.

The now-popular March Madness branding belonged exclusively to the NCAA men's tournament until 2022. 

However, the use of brackets for women's games dates back to the early 1980s.

The inaugural NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament took place in 1982.

Recently, a resurfaced social media post from Harris unveiled the vice president's bracket from 2021.

Last month, Harris shared a photo of her brackets, which showed her prediction of South Carolina and USC meeting in the title game, with the Gamecocks winning the championship.
