Reese Witherspoon's spot-on impression of Nicole Kidman leaves audience in splits at AFI Life Achievement Award event

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Reese Witherspoon must think highly of Nicole Kidman if imitation truly is the purest form of flattery.

The 'Legally Blonde' actress gave a tribute speech at the 'AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute To Nicole Kidman' event impersonating her 'Big Little Lies' co-star, and the similarities were striking.

The tribute to Kidman, which took place on April 27, 2024, will air on TNT on Monday, June 17 at 10 pm ET/PT, and on Turner Classic Movies on June 27 at 8 pm ET/PT, per People.

Speaking onstage at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, the 'Walk the Line' star, 48, gave an accurate impression of Nicole Kidman, 56, discussing Kidman's capacity to find new filmmakers to collaborate with.

The TNT channel broadcast a video on June 14 where Witherspoon imitated Kidman's Australian accent to the hilt, eliciting an outburst of laughter from the crowd.

They captioned it, "Reese Witherspoon does one hell of Nicole Kidman impression."

She went on to say that the 'Moulin Rouge' actress has always chosen her collaborators "proactively."

"Most actors wait by the phone to be chosen by a director. But as an actor, Nicole has always been proactive. Even in her earliest work, she picks her directors," Witherspoon said.

Witherspoon impersonated Kidman, mimicking her Australian accent, as she explained how Kidman frequently discovers filmmakers from overseas films.

"She’ll often say to me a foreign film I’ve absolutely ever heard of, like, y’all. And she’s like, 'But do you see that director? It’s incredible. Reese, we must get her. We must‘," Witherspoon remarked.

As the cameras panned to Kidman and her husband Keith Urban's responses, Witherspoon said, "And I'm like, 'Yeah, OK. You call her first. And I'll just be on the phone.'"

Born in Hawaii and raised in Australia, Kidman co-produces the HBO miniseries 'Big Little Lies' alongside Witherspoon in addition to being its lead, per E! News.

Nicole Kidman received accolades from her fellow actors

Peers honored Kidman's achievements at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala with poignant remarks.

She received the coveted honor from her 'Big Little Lies' co-stars, Witherspoon and Meryl Streep. Additionally, she received cheerful tributes from Naomi Watts and Morgan Freeman, her co-stars and close friends from the Paramount series 'Lioness'.

Ava DuVernay, Zac Efron, Cynthia Erivo, and Joey King were among the other guests. Efron, Kidman's regular co-star with whom she appears in the forthcoming Netflix film 'A Family Affair', gave a speech in her honor.

In her acceptance speech, Kidman stated, "It is a privilege to make films. And glorious to have made films and television with these storytellers who allowed me to run wild and be free and play all of these unconventional women."
