Reporter asks Trump why viral kiss cam couple got more attention than his would-be assassin

WASHINGTON, DC: At a press conference in Washington, DC on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump expressed frustration over the limited public information about the man who attempted to assassinate him last year, especially in contrast to the viral fame of a cheating scandal that unfolded on a concert kiss cam just days ago.
The question came from a reporter referencing the now-infamous Coldplay concert moment where former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR chief Kristin Cabot, both married to other people, were caught on a “kiss cam” during a show at Gillette Stadium.

The couple’s awkward reaction and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s unscripted commentary sent social media into a frenzy.

"We know more about two people at a Coldplay concert, just hours after that viral video, than we know about Thomas Crooks — one year attempting to assassinate you. What is holding back the investigation on Thomas Crooks?" pic.twitter.com/rpcrv6iuaw

“I find it very interesting that we know more about two people at a Coldplay concert within hours of that video going viral than we do about Thomas Crooks — one year after he tried to assassinate you,” the reporter said during Trump’s meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Trump, who narrowly survived the July 2024 attack during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, acknowledged the efforts of the Secret Service but questioned the pace and transparency of the investigation into shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.

“They’ve told me things, and they really say they haven’t found anything that abnormal,” Trump said. “The Secret Service was very brave because they, you know, they were right there and they jumped on me. They made a mistake. They should have had somebody on that roof, and they should've had communication with the local police, who also, I mean, they did a very good job, but they made some mistakes.”
Crooks, 20, had fired eight rounds from the rooftop of a building near the rally site. One of the bullets grazed Trump’s ear, while another tragically killed a bystander. Crooks was ultimately shot and killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
Trump referred to him as “just a nut-job looking to do this,” but highlighted the need for a clearer picture of the motivations and background.
“Anything can happen,” Trump said. “But I think we have the best people now anywhere in the world right now. I think they've learned.”

Others leaned into conspiracy theories with one writing, “Trump is being overly nice and naive on this, just as he was with Hillary. Deep state destroyed all the evidence. Why else would the FBI have started to wash the roof days after?”
