WASHINGTON, DC: During a Trump-Vance 2024 rally on Monday, July 23, Ohio senator George Lang (R) expressed that he's "afraid" that former president Donald Trump's loss will escalate into a civil war.

The senator, however, later withdrew his statement, raising eyebrows.

Sen George Lang says civil war to save the country

George Lang was talking at a rally in Middletown, Ohio, the hometown of the first-term senator and GOP vice presidential nominee when he made these remarks.

“I believe wholeheartedly Donald Trump and Butler County’s JD Vance are the last chance to save our country, politically,” he said.

“I’m afraid if we lose this one, it’s going to take a civil war to save the country, and it will be saved," he added.

'I believe wholeheartedly Donald Trump and Butler County’s JD Vance are the last chance to save our country, politically,' Sen George Lang said

"It’s the greatest experiment in the history of mankind, and if we come down to a civil war, I’m glad we got people like … Bikers for Trump on our side,” he continued as The Hill reported.

Sen George Lang expresses regret over civil war 'divisive' remark

Soon after the event, George Lang rushed to social media to retract the statements, stating that they “do not accurately reflect my views.”

“I regret the divisive remarks I made in the excitement of the moment on stage,” Lang said on X.

“Especially in light of the assassination attempt of President Trump last week, we should all be mindful of what is said at political events, myself included", he added to the post.

Trump, the Republican nominee, and many of his prominent supporters have refused to accept the election results, regardless of the outcome.

Instead, they have stated that they are confident in their ability to win and avoided discussing a possible defeat.

Internet reacts to George Lang's divisive remarks amid political turmoil

The remarks have angered the Internet with many accusing Republicans of adopting the new tone ascribing it to the Project 2025 policy agenda.

While some alleged it was Trump was already working towards civil war.

"That’s just dumb," wrote one on X.  One more added, "The new tone republicans.'

"Is that straight outta the #Project2025 playbook?" questioned one of the X users. "He isn't afraid of one. He actively is pursuing exactly that," added one more.

"This is one of many comments of why we should be very afraid of Trump and his cult," warned one user.

"Oh phaleeease. Stop with the nonsense," one user lashed out and another asked, "Is that a threat?"

"We already know how they'll act," predicted one.
