SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH: Following a failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania rally, Republican Sen Mike Lee demanded to drop all criminal charges against the former president for the good of the nation.
While speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, gunshots were fired at the Republican presumptive nominee, injuring his right ear. The Secret Service agents immediately rushed him to the motorcade.
The shooter who aimed Trump from a nearby building's rooftop was fatally shot on the spot. The suspect is a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania named Thomas Matthew Crooks. A rally attendee died, and two were injured in the chaos.
The ex-president later took to his Truth Social platform, saying the gunshot pierced the top of his right ear. Trump further added that he knew something was wrong after hearing whizzing sounds and the gunshots. Instantly, he felt the bullet tearing the skin.
Sen Mike Lee makes unusual request in favor of Donald Trump after attempted assassination
The senator from Utah tried to take advantage of the unexpected turn of events at the Pennsylvania rally to free Donald Trump from his multiple criminal charges.
Mike Lee posted on X a statement from him, and former US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, calling President Joe Biden to drop all criminal charges against the 45th president to "heal" the country from the shooting.
"We've got to take the political temperature down, as evidenced by what happened in Pennsylvania today," the staunch Trump ally wrote.
"We call on President Biden to immediately order that all federal criminal charges against President Trump be dropped, and to ask the governors of New York and Georgia to do the same."
"Such a gesture would help heal wounds and allow all Americans to take a deep breath and reflect on how we got here. Our prayers are with the victims of the shooting, President Trump and our country," he added.

Trump was convicted in the New York hush money case in May, but the verdict, scheduled to be announced on July 11, was pushed to September following the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity. In addition, he faces three indictments over his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results and mishandling of classified documents.
Lee made a similar demand last month during an interview on Fox News. According to Raw Story, the Republican lawmaker at the time claimed the New York conviction against the MAGA spearhead contained several instances of "reversible error". Therefore, the prosecutors handling the case should walk away after confessing the error on appeal.
Internet reacts as Mike Lee demands charges against Donald Trump be dropped
Social media users outrightly rejected Mike Lee's call for freeing Donald Trump from all criminal charges in light of the failed assassination attempt.
Users on X pointed out that the incident was not related to the indictments.
"The histrionics unfold... these guys are going pull out all the stops, it's going to get really weird as their popularity drops," a user wrote.
"Not Gonna Happen," another stated.
"So ridiculous. The more they milk this the more suspicious it becomes," added a third user.

"The unfortunate incident tonight doesn’t give Trump a free pass on anything. That’s what SCOTUS is for," read a fourth response.
"Nice try, but one has nothing to do with the other. The shooting doesn’t wipe out every crime he committed," another user said.
"Two things that are not related bring this excuse to any judge and expect to be laughed on your face and throw in jail for contempt," someone else commented.

"No. That’s not how any of this works. The shooting was bad but it doesn’t forgive violations of the law," an individual remarked.
"No. Hope he heals quickly and well, though, so that he’ll be in full health to face accountability in the courts," read one remark.
"Yeah, okay. And let's drop any charges facing a person that gets rear ended on his way to court. Makes complete sense," another added.
