Republicans grill Zohran Mamdani over grocery store plan: 'Show an ID to shop, but not to vote'

WASHINGTON, DC: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's plan for city-owned grocery stores has become the center of a new political fight after officials confirmed the stores will require some form of identification to access discounted goods.

The requirement has drawn accusations of hypocrisy from Republicans, who note that Mamdani has opposed voter ID requirements.

The controversy stems from Mamdani's recent announcement that five city-owned grocery stores, one in each borough, would offer roughly 30% discounts on essential food items, with at least one location expected to open by 2027.

The comparison to identification requirements at the ballot box was immediate.

Sen Rick Scott of Florida wrote that Mamdani's plan was "not just ironic, it's hypocritical," arguing that requiring ID for grocery discounts while opposing similar requirements for federal elections undercuts the mayor's own position.

He also called for the passage of the SAVE America Act, which would mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration.

President Donald Trump also weighed in, saying he wished voters faced the same identification standard Mamdani was proposing for his grocery stores.

A spokesperson for Mamdani's office pushed back on the comparison as "apples-to-oranges," clarifying that shoppers would not need to apply through any city agency to access the discounts, though the response did little to quiet the criticism.

A key concern was that people could buy items at a lower price and resell them at a higher price elsewhere.

When a reporter asked Mamdani during a press briefing how he planned to address the issue, the mayor reaffirmed his promise to New Yorkers.

“The programme is for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a programme for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling,” he said, before passing the microphone to an official from the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

Republican Rep Nancy Mace of South Carolina made a similar argument.

“Zohran Mamdani wants you to show an ID to shop at his city’s grocery store, but GOD FORBID we require proof of ID to vote,” she posted.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, backed by President Donald Trump, would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

Democrats argue that photo ID requirements disproportionately affect Black, Native American, elderly, and student voters and remain an ineffective tool for preventing voter fraud.

“Mamdani is requiring PHOTO ID to use his city-run grocery stores, event though that would be ‘literal violence’ if it were for voting…. His team says it will just be a ‘library card-esque thing.’ Great! How about a ‘library card-esque thing’ for midterms and presidential elections?” asked Mario Nawfal on X.

Elon Musk replied to the clip, “Oh, the irony is too much…”

Mamdani's grocery store initiative, part of a broader platform of city-run affordability programs he campaigned on, is still in its early stages. Specific eligibility and verification procedures are expected to be finalized as the city works through its request-for-proposals process in the coming months.
