Rudy Giuliani's daughter Caroline faces 'emotional storm' as backing Harris may damage their relationship
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Caroline Rose Giuliani, daughter of Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, said on Wednesday, October 2, that endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris was not an easy decision for her as she had to deal with an "emotional storm".
During a CNN interview on Wednesday, Caroline said she had to see whether she "had the fortitude to share" her thoughts with her father, knowing it could hurt her relationship with him who is 80 and "in the last years of his life".
Caroline says her decision would hurt her dad
Caroline said that she did not tell her father that she was writing an essay endorsing Harris over Donald Trump, but always made her opinions clear, as per Vanity Fair. Moreover, she had earlier endorsed Joe Biden and Harris over Trump in the 2020 election.
During her 'OutFront' interview, she said, "It was definitely not a decision I came to lightly. Figuring out how to articulate these feelings with the storm that I’ve been experiencing the last few years – the emotional storm – was really hard and also figuring out if I had the fortitude to share it knowing that it could definitely damage my relationship with my dad in the last years of his life was really, really painful."
She added that Trump becoming a presidential candidate "felt kind of surreal" and also talked about issues that urged her to support Harris over the former president involving the environment, democracy, and her hopes of being able to raise her future children in a country where they "feel safe and respected".
She said, "It was like I can't believe this is really happening after everything that he's done to our country, after being the first president to not participate in the peaceful transfer of power, like it didn't feel real. The stakes all hit me at once."
Caroline says she has not yet spoken to her father
During the interview, Caroline said she has not yet spoken to her father about her endorsement decision "and probably won’t for a while".
She said, "I’ve always made my opinions clear, and he does know that I was raised to speak my truth, so I don't think any of it will come as a surprise to him. I hope he knows that I love him."
During the interview, she was also asked whether she’s afraid her father will go to prison and she said, "Of course, that’s a terrible thing to think about, and it is a fear, and I don’t like to think about it."
She added that she wants to focus on the future and reemphasized her support for Harris.
Caroline's support for Democrats is not something new. In 2016, she supported Hillary Clinton while her father vociferously backed Trump. Similarly, in 2008, she joined a Facebook group that supported Barack Obama for president while her father was seeking the GOP nomination.
Caroline calls Harris US' 'only chance for a better future'
In her Vanity Fair piece, Caroline said that Harris is the country’s "only chance for a better future". She said, "Take it from me, Trump destroys everything he touches. I saw it happen to my family. Don’t let it happen to yours, or to our country."
She added, "Kamala Harris will guide us into a brighter future, but only if we unite behind her."
