LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sandra Bullock has opened up about how her children navigated longtime partner Bryan Randall's private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

The actress revealed that her son Louis and daughter Laila were both aware of Randall's illness and handled his condition differently.

Bullock, who is a mother to Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, discussed the experience while appearing on Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes' podcast 'SmartLess'.

She explained how each child responded to Randall's illness as his condition progressed.

Sandra Bullock’s kids knew about Bryan Randall’s ALS

Bullock said her children were "completely aware" of Randall's condition because they could see the physical and behavioral changes taking place at home.

"Oh, completely aware. Absolutely aware, because eventually, once there is a situation where you’re bedridden, we all have to go there," she said. "It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it."

The actress added that her children were "very astute" and noticed more than just Randall's physical condition.

Bullock said, "They could see. They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids, very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us."

Louis and Laila handled Bryan Randall’s ALS differently

Bullock explained that her children handled the situation differently and that she tried to support them according to what each child needed.

She said she would bring things up when they asked or noticed something and ask them how they wanted to deal with it.

"Louis handled it very differently than Laila. About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around," Bullock said.

"So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time."

Bullock said she did not want Louis to feel that he had to take on an adult role. She also recalled how the pandemic affected the family while Randall was ill.

Laila, meanwhile, remained more closely bonded with Randall for longer.

Bullock said that changed about six months before Laila asked not to be called over to visit him. Bullock told her daughter that she could decide whether she wanted to visit and promised to be there if she wanted to leave.

Bullock also respected Laila's wishes by using a different side of the house so her daughter would not have to see Randall when she did not want to.

Sandra Bullock focused on family after Bryan Randall’s death

Randall, a model-turned-photographer, met Bullock in 2015 after photographing her son Louis' birthday.

The couple later made their relationship public that year. Randall died in August 2023 at age 57 after a three-year battle with ALS.

Following Randall's death, Bullock took time to focus on healing and her children before returning to work.

An insider told PEOPLE in April that Bullock had "spent a lot of time healing, being with her kids and being at home" and wanted to ensure that she and her children were in the best possible place before she returned to work.

Bullock's comments offer a rare glimpse into how her family navigated Randall's illness privately and how she gave her children space to process the experience in their own ways.
