Sandra Bullock reveals rare details about late partner Bryan Randall's final years
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sandra Bullock is opening up about the loss of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, and the private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that led to his death at age 57 in August 2023.
Appearing on Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes’ podcast 'SmartLess,' she recalled the “traumatic diagnosis” and the emotional weight of keeping his illness private. The episode will be released on Monday, August 24.
Sandra Bullock opens up about Bryan Randall’s ALS diagnosis
Bullock revealed that Randall “asked me not to share” his diagnosis, a request she honored throughout his illness. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried, I honored it,” she explained.
She shared that keeping the diagnosis private, particularly during the global Covid-19 pandemic, “isolated me in the process” as she carried the “huge weight” of his illness. “I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she added, noting that he “was ill for half of our relationship.”
The couple co-parented Bullock’s son Louis and daughter Laila, as well as Randall’s daughter from a previous relationship, Skylar Staten Randall.
Reflecting on the loss, Bullock said, “My person left a lot earlier than the body left.” She added that she did not think she had dealt with that reality until after Randall passed because she was “just on this treadmill.”
Recalling Randall’s symptoms, she described ALS as “the process of elimination over the course of a year,” during which they repeatedly returned for evaluations involving milestones, grips and breathing tests. “You have to quietly plan,” she said, adding that she is “a very good planner with illness.”
She also recalled her father’s “accidents” and her mother’s cancer, explaining, “It doesn’t scare me, not the illness itself, it doesn’t scare me.” However, she had two young children navigating the illness, including a little girl who saw Randall as a father figure.
Bryan Randall’s family and Sandra Bullock’s return to work
Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person who knew about Randall’s diagnosis “for a while.” She later confided in friends including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Jason Bateman’s wife.
“When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things, and it’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark,” she recalled. Randall’s family previously shared after his death that he had died “peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS.”
They also revealed that he had chosen early on to keep his journey with ALS private and that those who cared for him had done their best to honor his request.
The duo met in 2015, and later that year, the couple made their relationship more public when they attended Aniston and Justin Theroux’s wedding. Following Randall’s death, Bullock “needed time to care for herself.” She spent time healing, being with her children and staying at home before returning to work.
Her upcoming film 'Practical Magic 2,' in theaters September 10, features Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprising their roles from the original, alongside Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Mariduena, Lee Pace and Solly McLeod.
