Selena Gomez offers rare insight into starting a family, hints at hopes to become a mom 'one day'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez seems hopeful about becoming a mother in the future as she recently shared a sweet photo of a newborn baby on her Instagram Stories with the words, “one day...” The 34-year-old actress, who is married to record producer Benny Blanco, has previously spoken about her desire to start a family.
Selena Gomez opens up about her hopes of becoming a mom
Gomez previously expressed her hopes of becoming a mother while celebrating her role as Alex Russo in the 'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place' sequel series. In October, she shared a clip from her final episode and wrote, “Alex Russo is a mommy . Hopefully one day that’ll be me.”
During a March episode of the 'Jay Shetty Podcast', Gomez and Blanco also discussed their hopes of starting a family together. Gomez shared that she loves children and enjoys making them laugh, “I don’t know what will happen, obviously, but I love children."
“I love making [children] laugh; they’re just so sweet. So absolutely, when that day comes, I’m so excited for it,” she added.
Blanco also highlighted Gomez’s connection with children, explaining that she immediately approaches children when they are around and can spend hours talking with them. He connected that bond to her career as a child performer, noting that she started working as a child and that connecting with young people became her way of connecting with others.
He also described her as “the ultimate level of shy,” saying that she usually wants to disappear into a crowd. However, Blanco noted that "children bring out a different side of her."
Selena Gomez has considered surrogacy and adoption
In September 2024, Gomez spoke with Vanity Fair for the outlet’s October issue about her hopes of becoming a mother and revealed that she cannot carry her own children because of medical issues.
“I haven’t ever said this...but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez said. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while…”
Gomez has previously spoken about complications from lupus, which she was diagnosed with in 2015. She also revealed her bipolar diagnosis in April 2020 during an episode of Miley Cyrus’ Instagram Live show 'Bright Minded.'
Despite being unable to carry children, Gomez described surrogacy and adoption as possibilities for her. “[But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.
“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people, I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” the 'Only Murders in the Building' star added.
