LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jeanine Pirro, a prominent figure on Fox News, came under fire recently for spreading misinformation about former President Donald Trump during a segment on 'The Five'.

In her commentary, Pirro made a significant error regarding Trump's legal standing, which prompted fact-checking and raised concerns about the spread of false information on the network.

Jeanine Pirro's false claims about Donald Trump's legal troubles

During the segment, Pirro claimed, "The Democrats spent the whole day saying ‘Donald Trump obstructed,'" in reference to former Justice Department special counsel Robert Hur’s testimony. She then asserted, "Well, news flash, Donald Trump was not charged with obstructing." However, this assertion contradicts legal facts.

In reality, Trump faced charges related to obstruction of justice. Specifically, he was charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice for allegedly retaining classified documents containing sensitive national defense information after leaving office and attempting to obstruct the subsequent investigation.

Moreover, Trump faces additional obstruction charges in a separate federal indictment linked to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Backlash and fact-checking efforts follow Pirro's misinformation

After Pirro's comments aired, users on X (formerly Twitter) appended a note to a viral clip of her remarks, providing accurate information and links to the relevant indictments to counter Pirro's false narrative.

Robert Hur's congressional testimony, which Pirro referenced, centered on his recent report that concluded President Joe Biden would not face charges for retaining classified documents after his tenure as vice president.

However, Hur faced criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. Republicans questioned his decision not to charge Biden, while Democrats raised concerns about his portrayal of Biden's memory in the report.

Democrats drew comparisons between the treatment of Biden and Trump in the legal sphere, highlighting Biden's cooperation with the investigation contrasted with Trump's alleged obstruction of attempts to retrieve sensitive material.

Pirro attempted to defend Trump by suggesting it was unfair that he faced charges while Biden did not, arguing that Trump had "the right to declassify as president."

However, this defense overlooks Trump's admission, captured on tape, that he possessed a document post-presidency that he did not declassify.

Social media reacts to Pirro's accuracy and state of mind

Amid Jeanine Pirro's misinformation controversy, social media users took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express skepticism and criticism.

One user wrote, "She's been drinking again, hasn't she? Or is it her aging memory?."

"Who’s going to tell her?, "another added.

Another one commented, "He's just charged with a whole bunch of other stuff."

One user replied, "Judge is obviously consuming two boxes of wine already."

One wrote, "Have another glass of wine and lets talk about it."
