LONDON, UK: Tom Selleck has recounted his memeroable encounter with Princess Diana during a White House state dinner in November 1985 in his memoir 'You Never Know'

As one of the three actors, others being John Travolta and Clint Eastwood,  personally invited by the princess, Selleck found himself in a unique position to witness and participate in a special moment, reported Fox News.

Selleck reflected on his anticipation before meeting the royals, admitting to feeling "anxious" as he awaited their arrival. However, upon their introduction, he found Princess Diana to be "charming, graceful, and beautiful."

Selleck also noted Prince Charles's unique talent for making others feel valued, expressing that Charles possessed the rare ability "to make you feel that you are important to him in your moment together."

“After dinner, everyone moved into the East Room for music and dancing. President Reagan and Princess Diana danced and Charles danced with Nancy. Then John Travolta and the princess started dancing,” he explained, adding that he and Eastwood chose not to stand on the dance floor.

However, an unexpected turn of events occurred when Selleck was approached by a woman who expressed concern about Princess Diana dancing with Travolta for a second time, fearing it might spark rumors.

“Mr Travolta and the princess are dancing together for the second time. We can’t have that. We don’t want to start rumors, can we?” After both Eastwood and Selleck met her in silence, the woman added, “Mr Selleck, you need to step in and replace him.”

Selleck was then urged to step in and replace Travolta for the next dance.

"'NO MORE WITH JOHN TRAVOLTA!' was my response, probably too loudly,” Selleck wrote.

Selleck took on the role of dancing partner to the princess.

“She was not happy. 'Very good. Next dance, come with me,'” Selleck recounted.

During the next song, Selleck honored his promise and took to the dance floor with Princess Diana, relieved that it was a slow number. Despite his nerves and lack of ballroom dancing experience, he joked that he certainly wasn't going to "sink the Princess of Wales."

Selleck even apologized to Diana for his dancing skills.

“Princess Diana was pretty and had a very shy quality despite being well trained in the art of conversation,” he explained. “I must say she seemed to be enjoying herself. I was relieved that he spoke most of the time. Let’s just say it wasn’t my finest hour as a conversationalist.”

Accompanied by his wife, Jillie Mack, Selleck recalled that while he danced with Diana, Mack danced with Prince Charles.

After the dance, Charles thanked Mack for their dance, expressing his gratitude for her assistance on the dance floor. Charles humorously added, "I was so happy you saved me. All of Nancy’s friends kept stepping on me."

“The prince asked Jillie for a second dance. Clint took over for me and I ended up dancing with my friend Nancy,” Selleck explained.

“She was relaxed and I was relaxed. They were playing a song from the 1940s. I wish I could remember what it was, because Nancy was singing quietly. What a beautiful way to end the evening.”
