LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Olympic gymnast Simone Biles has not held back in defending her husband, Chicago Bears defender Jonathan Owens, regarding his comments about being the “catch” in their relationship.

In her second installment of her Netflix documentary, 'Simone Biles Rising', released on Friday, October 25, Biles addressed the backlash Owens has faced since his interview last year on 'The Pivot'.

Jonathan Owens and Biles first connected on the dating app Raya in 2020 and have been together since, tying the knot in April 2023.

Jonathan Owens' 'catch' comment on 'The Pivot' podcast

During Jonathan Owens' appearance on 'The Pivot', he was asked who he considered the “catch” in his relationship with Simone Biles.

“I always say that the men are the catch,” Owens replied, leading host to ask how he managed to “pull” the world-renowned gymnast.

Owens, however, quickly clarified, saying, “Man, it’s really how she pulled me, man. That’s the question.”

Owens also earlier this year mentioned that, at the time, he was not aware of Biles’ fame or accomplishments, and even did not had a clue who Biles was.

“A lot of people don’t believe me when I say I had no clue,” Owens shared in an interview with Vanity Fair in February.

He added that he had never paid much attention to gymnastics and was focused on football training during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

However, after discovering her Instagram account, Owens was intrigued by her success. “I was like, ‘Man, she got a lot of followers, she must be pretty good,’” he said.

Simone Biles addresses 'false sense of reality' on social media backlash

The backlash against Jonathan Owens’ comments led to strong reactions online, with many perceiving his remarks as dismissive or condescending toward Simone Biles.

In her Netflix documentary, Biles addressed the criticism directly, defending her husband from the online trolls.

“Social media gives [followers] this false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function,” said Biles, who holds 11 Olympic medals.

She highlighted the mental toll of constant scrutiny, especially during an Olympic year, stating, “Most of the time they don’t understand the mental toll that it takes," Daily Mail reported.

Biles would not tolerate negative commentary on her family especially her husband Owens.

“I know we signed up to be judged in the gym but when you guys are going to talk about him or my family, yeah I’m gonna come at you guys,” Biles asserted.

Simone Biles describes Jonathan Owens as 'one of a kind'

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens, who married in April 2023, have since built a home together in Houston, Texas.

For Biles, their love holds greater value than the medals and awards that fill her career.

“That’s not how you measure love,” she shared, according to Independednt.

"Most of the time, I bite my tongue but now yeah I have a voice, I’ve always had a voice. Just because you didn’t think I wouldn’t see it doesn’t mean I’m not obligated to respond. It’s crazy," she remarked.

In April, Biles also gave her perspective on Owens’ “catch” comments during an appearance on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast.

She wholeheartedly supported him, saying, "He said he was a catch because he is! I’ve never met a man like him."
