MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Democratic representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich) denounced the college suspension of Rep Ilhan Omar's (D-Minn) daughter for her involvement in a pro-Palestinian demonstration on campus.

According to The Hill, earlier that day, Isra Hirsi, Omar's daughter, posted announcing her suspension from the institution for "standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide."

How did the Democratic congresswomen show support for Isra Hirsi?

Rep Tlaib shared Hirsi’s post on X, stating, “From UM to Vanderbilt to USC to Columbia, students across our country are being retaliated against for using their constitutional rights to protest genocide. It’s appalling.”

“I’m an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest @ColumbiaSJP, in my 3 years at @BarnardCollege I have never been reprimanded or received any disciplinary warnings,” Hirsi claimed in her post.

“I just received notice that I am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide,” Hirsi remarked.

“How does a student with no disciplinary record suddenly get to a suspension less than 24 hours after a nonviolent protest? What merits asymmetric crackdowns on Palestinian human rights protests,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.

Hirsi, a Barnard College student affiliated with Columbia University but one with some autonomy, was recently mentioned by Columbia University.

However, Barnard College chose not to provide any specific comments on the matter. Instead, it referred to a statement from its senior staff in which it was stated that students from both Columbia and Barnard had “set up an unauthorized encampment” on Columbia's South Lawn.

Columbia made many requests for students engaging in the protest to leave the lawn before "a number of Barnard Senior Staff also went to the lawn to ask students participating in the encampment to leave," according to the statement.

The university's senior staff members reportedly warned the students that they would face disciplinary action if they refused to comply with the evacuation order.

Additionally, the students were informed that they would receive an interim suspension if they did not vacate the premises by Wednesday night.

The school administration imposed sanctions on the protesting students two days after the University of Southern California revoked the valedictorian's privilege to deliver a speech at the graduation ceremony, citing "substantial" security concerns.

The valedictorian's social media accounts showed her affiliation with pro-Palestinian platforms.

The suspension of protesting students coincided with a series of demonstrations and protests on various American college campuses following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7.

Hirsi's suspension occurred a month after civil rights groups filed a lawsuit against Columbia University for suspending pro-Palestine student groups during the previous fall semester.

Internet fires back at 'The Squad' after they showed solidarity with Ilhan Omar's daughter

One X user remarked, "Sit down @AOC. Actions have consequences."

Another user said, "The appalling thing is these activists being in Congress whatsoever."

A user wrote, "Her daughter is not a victim."

One user claimed, "Of course! What else would we expect from this gang?"

Another X user quipped, "The Hamas caucus is mad."

Finally, this user tweeted, "Suspension is lenient. They should be expelled and deported. University is a place for study, not for radical activities. Don't cause trouble for other students."
